Maybe some SMD component with a crack or soldering defect. You can lightly tap on the working boards with a pencil or a wooden stick and see if there is any change in the image. This way you can even localize the defect.

I'll keep that in mind if it crops up again, thanks.

Right now I'm just going to leave things alone, since it seems to be working now. 😅

The problem possibly was in the pixel bus link where a data line wasn't connecting or such, this could have lead to a tonality difference that changes with each scanline as card take turns to render them.
I'm not actually fully familiar with how the cards pass data via the SLI link but I assume it is digital RGB and some control strobes and such a scenario isn't impossible.

640 x 480 will have scanlines visible on most CRTs, except on small (15" and less) or low end things with a coarse dot pitch.

Hello, I am new one here. I bought diamond monster 3dfx a few days ago and i get some artefacts on dark background.
Are those scanline you are talking about?

Those scanlines I mentioned are only visible on a CRT due to way the display itself works, they won't happen on a LCD.

The ones you are seeing suggest some bad connection somewhere, it looks like some lower data lines of a pixel/color bus may not be connecting or such.

I had the same "problem" with SLI setup on WinXP. Installed Win98SE instead and used official 3dfx drivers and everything was fine. I never checked the V-Sync tho. Maybe some unofficial WinXP drivers disable it.

Those were actually exactly the kind of "scanlines" that I was seeing on my CRT, but unfortunately couldn't photograph, due to aperture grille pattern messing up the photos.

As i mentioned, they resolved completely after i reseated and reconnected the cards a couple of times.

These artefacts - lines are not only my voodoo1 , it seems they are on voodoo 2 also in 640 mode...
This is realy doubtful to me.
Can anybody tell, that you have same stipes in 640 mode on dark background?

I just had to comment and say I find it both amusing and historically relevant that one of your examples of scanlines is a close-up of Lara Croft's upper body.

Lara's bumps are not only triangle, they are stripeble aslo)))

Hey!
I see such stripes in the shadows on the rear window of the car in the game NFS2SE. I noticed them on Voodoo1. I installed Voodoo2 - the stripes are also there. They are visible only in the shadowed places. Do you have such stripes? Does it depend on the type of monitor? I have an LCD monitor.
On cards with DAC TVP3409 they are almost invisible, but on cards with DAC ICS5342-3 they are much more clearly visible.

If you have VSync disabled, the two cards will be rendering different frames some of the time. This makes the interleaved alternate scanlines very apparent, particularly in scenes with lots of horizontal motion.

For best image quality, have VSync enabled when using SLI. You generally only want to disable it if you're running benchmarks.

I disabled vsync and ran a q2 timedemo as a test and you're right they are very apparent now in the gun animations. Vsync back on and it looks normal again
