Ah, SIS boards. Then it's correct probably, they're slower than Intel.

Ok i will upgrade to a FIC PT-2007 with Pentium 233Mhz and 64MB SD-RAM soon. Will see how this boost the Ark2000PV

What is the reason for Quake running on PIII 933 to produce less FPS even at 640x480?

What is best way to get Quake to have better frame rate, not the hard ware listed here for "PCI graphics round up - dos"?

Cheers,

quake just being quake, cpu based 3d rendering hit a wall. there was a reason why GLquake was developed afterwards

When you get to GF4 and GF5, DOS performance starts to go down.

do you have some benchmarks for this? I thought all nvidia cards until geforce fx (5xxx) starting with riva128 shared the same 2d core.
I remember I DOS-benchmarked my K6-3 with a matrox mystique, riva 128, tnt2 ultra and gf3-500 against a gf4 4600, and the gf4 was the fastest in that setup

great comparison btw., always appreciated

PC#1: K6-III+ 400 | 512MB | Geforce4 | Voodoo1 | SB Live | AWE64 | GUS PNP Pro
PC#2: 486DX2-66 | 64MB | Riva128 | AWE64 | GUS PNP | PAS16
PC#3: 386DX-40 | 32MB | CL-GD5434 | SB Pro | GUS MAX | PAS16

I'll have to dig them up, I posted this about 5 years ago. 😀 They should be in a spreadsheet somewhere. I'll see if I can find anything and reply back.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

When I benchmarked my PCI cards, my FX5200 didn't fare well.

the 5200 was a disaster anyway, when coming from a gf4 it was a downgrade

So the GF4 I benched was an MX4000. That was the only GF4 I had during these tests, so I have no idea how a regular one would fare.

The Cirrus Logic CL-GD5446 being a cheap top contender I am wondering if you can also push it further.
I guess you tested the 1MB version but I also saw a 2MB version on ebay. Also most 1MB as well as 2MB version seem to have 2 empty banks. Are these for additional vram?

Voodoo3 2000 (1999)
Lows:
-some issues with LCD monitors according to https://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/

Do we know that this means?

Thanks.

I tested the Voodoo 3 and stumbled over various issues. It's by far less "out of the box compatible" than it might seem.

But in terms of LCD color issues, I did not have that with keen, but with "newer" 640x400 games.
The list also mentions "Flight Simulator 5.x (SVGA 640x400 HQ) - Flashing colors".

I did not test this in particular, but I had Lands of Lore 2 with 640x400 Software renedering, where the portrait was flickering.
On Toonstruck, which is also 640x400 the colors were broken, especially if you go into the main menu. This does NOT show on a CRT, but it does show on a VGA LCD Monitor as well as on a capture.
However I found a workaround for that. I redefined the mode, increased it from 70 to 75Hz which solved the issue.

If you check my "Time Travel" Video from the linked timestamp onward, it's basically all Voodoo 3 issues (excluding the end), and my solutions for them:
https://youtu.be/L2qqSGOsBhw?t=925

The only things I have not been able to fix is:
Early Voodoo 1 games are too dark. (The workaround provided in Phils Video doesnt work)
Die Fugger 2 (German Only Game) which uses 15 Bit Color Depth is impossible to run on Voodoo3. It will always just go back to 256 Colors.

Edit: Another thing to mention: On my card all 320x200 Games initially had Snow, and it needed a BIOS flash to work. (got one of these V3 3500 Compaq Cards)

as i expected, the cirrus5446 performed decently despite being a cheap card. but did you say that its 1mb? i can see that its a stb nitro64 with 4 dram chips in the picture, and i think each of those chips are 512kb.
the 5446 is also the last pure 2d card from cirrus, save for the extremely rare 5480 which is 5446 updated to use 100mhz 64bit sgram.
and for the pentium3 test, you should use fastvid to make most performance out of the cards.
