It's a cute LG monitor. I love those later CRT models from an early 00's.

I don't like flat CRT monitors. They have thicker glass and more glares because of that. And they have geometry distortion because the glass is still curved from the inner side.

Those are fake flat CRTs, but real flat CRTs do exist, and there are also Trinitron (and similar tech from other vendors) monitors that are flat in one direction, but slightly curved in the other.

My MAG 996PF was like this for sure, but I still miss it. I seem to recall it was in perfectly good condition when I had to get rid of it due to lack of space. 🙁 Kept it's little brother 786PF.

Hello
Does early AMD socket 939 high-end AGP system hit different than old beige Intel computers? 😁
Here is my specs:
AMD Athlon x2 4800+
MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM
ATI HD3850 AGP
KINGSTON HYPERX DDR1 512MT x4
SOUND BLASTER X-FI ELITE SB0550

I'm just curious to know what those models were? I assume, Sony?

Very nice system 😀. Clean and very unassuming from the outside.
What temps do you get with Zalman? Did you delid/repaste CPU?

I had in mind few s939 combos:
Abit AV8 (K8T800 Pro) with uGuru "clock"+ Athlon 4400 X2 + Leadtek GeForce 6800
Abit X8 (K8T890)+ Athlon 4000 + Leadtek GeForce 7950GT (or ATI X850XT)
Tyan Thunder K8 (nForce4) + Athlon 4800 X2 + ATI X1800XT
.... keeping main components somewhat period correct.

From all the issues I had with those systems back in the day I tend to pair VIA + Geforce / nForce3 + ATI for AGP systems.

I hate that this is considered "retro" now but I'm in my mid 30s and decided to recreate an idealized version of my first homebuilt PC. I know that most everything on here is from the 80s and 90s era but I figured I'd share it anyway

Monitor and desk are actually my original ones. I owned the G15 keyboard and mx518 back in the day but I had to track those down since mine were long gone.

CASE: Thermaltake Xaser III

Intel Core 2 extreme QX6850 3.0 GHz

4gb Corsair dominator DDR 2 1066 xms2-8500

2x EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT superclocked edition

4x Western Digital Raptor 10k RPM SATA 2 drives in 2 RAID 1 arrays (I should know better but they're refurbs and I have a backup drive just in case)

Logitech MX 518 optical gaming mouse

Logitech gen 1 G15 keyboard

Red Alert 2 mousepad

I've been talking with some Gen Z retro tech guys and windows XP era gear is the new big thing. This must be what it felt like for everyone who grew up in the DOS era responding to the youngbloods on here back in the mid 2000s

My other systems:

Hewitt Rand 386. Windows 3.11, 8mb of RAM, am386 33mhz, surprisingly large 160mb kalok HDD, nothing special but it belonged to my grandfather so I have a sentimental attachment to it. Matching Startech printer

Mac SE/30 in dire need of a recap but otherwise amazingly well documented and original

Apple IIGS. Pretty much stock, has a RAM expansion card and original documentation/boxes since it belonged to my Dad

Random old win95 Gateway tower with a pII that I saved from being used as a door stop (funny story for another time) . I stuck a voodoo III in it years ago but had to sell the peripherals when I moved internationally.

1997 Dell Latitude LM laptop. It's in rough shape but it works.

maybe XP is now the thing some gen z remember seeing their parents use, and having their first computer experiences on, early gen z is from 1997 so they would have been kids during XP's era. Some later gen z will be wild for windows 8! (or maybe not)

Because the cables were getting a bit unmanageable, rebuilt my Pentium 4/Socket 478 rig into a new case. Might not be pretty, but the CPU temps max out at 50, and once I add another 80mm fan they should go lower. This time - flat cables, rounded cables do not really help with cable management as much as I would expect.

Greetings all,
A long-planned but very fiddly update to my dual-Athlon system. Upgraded from MP 2200+ to MP 2600+ (thoroughbred), and upgraded from noisy stock coolers to noisy Thermaltake Volcano 9s. A very tight fit and I do deeply dislike Socket A mounting systems. At least these coolers have the luxury of 3-wide socket hooks.

Only one DuctingMod installed because I’ve only been able to find this one example in the last 7 years! Got one lying around? DM me, hun. Would love a second one in this machine.

Also did a lot of ribbon cable folding since there are 4 of them all fighting for space and I wanted to neaten it all up. As aluminium cases go, this one actually has a lot more routing space than something like a Lian-Li PC-60, but it’s still a real challenge in a PATA/floppy system with a sound card front panel. Intake air is still a problem to be solved as a result.

A strange machine in many ways, but I did enjoy gathering all the “silver” drives and other panels!

A quick update to this one as the thermaltake fans were driving me nuts: Noctua edition. Went from frequent thermal failure at anything less than jet engine-sounding max rpm to quiet bliss. Didn’t ruin the look too dramatically either:

I think it has something to do with the LEDs in those memory sticks. Good luck finding 2GB XMS2 Pro modules (with those awesome LEDs on top)

4GB with a 64-bit OS still means actually 4GB, and Vista to me is just the OG 64-bit OS.

And also... PD2JK is correct. I like building very high spec period systems, but I will always compromise outright performance if I can do something ostentatious with memory.

I have been pushing this new system for a couple of days and I have tried out other memory configurations. nForce is a f-ing nightmare for this but I still have fun:

With a 4X2GB set of OCZ Gold 1066 on a 1600MHz FSB and a CPU overclock to 3800MHz, I get a 3DMark Vantage score of 18500

The XMS2 Pro LED DIMMs give me 17300 points. Guess which configuration I am keeping!

Color me envious! I want to do an nForce build myself eventually. Though I'm planning Tri-SLI with the legendary 8800 GTS or possibly Ultra. 😀

Well now's the time, most of it is still quite cheap for now. I did start off with 9800GT but I ultimately prefer to go a couple of GPU generations newer to give them an easier time.

Graphics has been fine, but I've just found nForce so unstable when trying to do anything interesting with CPU, FSB, or memory. It's kind of fun to tune in the stability but boy does it take a lot of digging through old threads form 2008! I think the later gen DDR3 (790i) based boards are a little better in that respect, but I just feel DDR2 is right for Vista.

I Haven't actually tried 3x SLi because I'd rather have dedicated PhysX, and a Sound Blaster but I'm sure it will look awesome.

I've actually been eying the EVGA nForce 790i Ultra. Has a 1x PCIE slot at the very top of the board, so it would actually let me run a Sound Blaster alongside 3-way SLI.
