Greetings!

I plan to extend my collection of devices.

Could you please advice me a (very old) PDA / Palmtop / pocket PC, that support sDOS 6.22 on a monochrome display and at least would enable me to Play Larry 1 or Commander Keen?

Ive seen those HP 200LX videos with Larry 3 and Sp2 GM MIDI adapter.
Or Commander Keen with Adlib adapter.

Hillarious! This seems to be the device of choice.

But it says it comes with DOS 5 on a ROM. So no chance for DOS 6.22 I guess.

Id really like to browse a list or youtube channel, that has very tiny and very old DOS 6.22 PDA / Palmtop / pocket PCs with monochrome screen.

8088 or 80186 CPU with 7 MHz is a good minimum Id say, but Im open to ideas, on how to play Larry or Keen on a ver yold and tiny monochrome display. 😀

Any reply is really appreciated.

You don't need version 6.22 to play games. Version 5 is generally enough for games, especially considering that later games will be heavy on the processor . Even DOSbox emulates Dos 5.0 by default.
By the way, 80186 is faster than 8088 which you mention. In fact, for gaming the bottleneck of palmtops will be graphics and even more - sound.
You really need to focus on games with CGA graphics and PC Speaker sound support.

Hi there! It depends.. Palm OS is 68000 based. It has GB emulators, for example.
For emulating DOS, an ARM PDA/HPC is better than MIPS R4000 or SH3.

Some things I do remember:

Re: When PC became soulless for you?
Re: Handheld PC's: What happened to them?
Re: DOS games running on a Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 SE PocketPC device ?

PS:

Even DOSbox emulates Dos 5.0 by default.

It's also the standard in Windows NT and OS/2, I think.
The 5.0 is for compatibility reasons, to distinguish from DOS 4 (a dead end in DOS development).

Another recommended compatibility setting is 3.20 or 3.30 or 3.31, I guess.
That's because DOS 5 kernal was based on DOS 3.3 kernal again (about same data structures in memory).

Older releases of DR DOS before DR DOS 6 did identity themselves as 3.31, I think.
Which means that DR DOS 5 did itself as 3.31 and was more compatible than the MS-DOS 5 that followed.

Fun fact: DR DOS 5 was first. It introduced support for UMB and HMA.
MS-DOS 5 was Microsoft's answer to it. So next time, give a copy of DR DOS a little hug. 🤗

PS/2: The continuing use of DOS 5 in Windows NT meant that DOS in Windows 9x had become more advanced, ironically.
It had features and utilities that weren't available in NTVDM.

PS/1:

I don’t know much about it, but a few come to mind.

To be honest, it's the first link on google when you search for palmtops...

200LX is where it's at, early Omnibooks from HP are quite nice too, even if slightly larger.
The Nec MobileGear 486 models would be great but they don't support CGA natively, there's a driver on that website that mostly solve the issue but not all games and apps are compatible with it.

Thank you so much for that list!
I probably compeltely failed at googling this time.^^

The NEC 486 sounds pretty neat. I remember having to use a tool called "emu.com" which fully emulated CGA on my Sanyo 8MHz PC.
I wasnt even aware 486 made it to this small size, even the site says its "pretty" big".

Thanks! 😀
