That really doesn't make sense, the GPU is over a 100mhz slower and the ram is slower. It's probably the fact they used a different driver.

It makes total sense. Nothing is slower. Some parts are actually faster. Nvidia GeForce 7800GTX 512 has the same core clock (as 7950GT), but faster memory clock and bigger/higher memory bandwidth than 7950GT; the rest of specs is the same (except G70 vs G71 difference).
7800GTX 512 and 7800GTX 256 are two completely different cards. GeForce 7800GTX 512 while still being G70 has great specs that it outperforms 7950GT which is G71. Too bad 7800GTX 512 is such a rare card.

7800GTX 512 - better memory, same as 7900GTX, worse overclockable core.
7950GT - worse memory, but doubled size from 7900GT, better overclockable core.

But keep in mind that 7950GT was made right before 8800 series, so AIB did a lot of combinations, including the same memory that was installed on 7900GTX. You can find overall better 7950GT.

If you have a chance to get the 7800GTX 512mb 550mhz then do it, sounds amazing. Techpowerup listed the core at 500mhz, I just assumed it was the same clock as the 7800GTX. All the 7950gt's I have still have a slightly higher core clock from 560 to 570Mhz.

I never knew they had different clock domains. Are there any other GPU's based on Curie architecture that do the same or only G70?

Only G70 and probably some late Quadro FX cards with G71 replacement chips, since they should be clocked identically.
