I am going crazy with over analysis paralysis as I am trying to work out the best sound card and set up for the following machine.
AMD K6 2/450Mhz (Not a plus version)
128MB RAM
VOODOO3 PCI
I want to run windows 98 AND speed sensitive DOS games on it. Games I want to play are:
Privateer 1 & 2 (1992 + 1996)
Wing Commander 1 & 2 (1990/1991) - VERY speed sensitive
Wing Commander 3 & 4 (1994/1996/97)
No one lives forever 1 + 2 (2000)
Myth 1 + 2 (1997)
FIRST issue. I have no idea how to slow it down. Everything I have seen online looks like you need a "+" CPU to use the utilities to slow it. Is this the case?
SECOND Issue: SOUND choices.
The system has 2x ISA slots and I am trying to figure out what the ideal sound options would be. I have the following available
1. Creative AWE64 VALUE CT4500 512k RAM - it is an unknown quantity to me as I have had it in my stash for a while but never used it
2. SB32 CT3600 with 2MB RAM in the SIMM sockets aka AWE32 Budget edition - also completely unknown quantity to me. I know it works as I did install on a system many years ago but I never kept it in it. Is it better, worse or a coin flip choice when compared to the AWE64 value?
3. Ensoniq Soundscape 2000 - Good GM, average MT32, TERRIBLE FM. It is FULLY MPU-401 compatible but I have no external MT32/Sound Canvas or other modules so its irrelevant
4. SB Pro 2 - Noisy compared to the other cards I am listing but genuine OPL3.
5. AvanceLogic ALS100 PRO16PNP with GM daughter board, a WaveMagic DREAM GMS 940800. This card is astoundingly compatible with SB Pr0 and much quieter while the GM daughter board is certainly better than FM eve if not audiophile standards
I have some other interesting cards but they are already in other completed projects. I am doing this so I can hopefully sell off a 496, Pentium 100 and a Pentium Pro 150 which my family think are excessive (I will miss them - the computers that is)
My thoughts:
1. Use the AWE64 or SB32 in one slot for Windows 98, and put the Avancelogic with GM daughter board in the other for DOS. So is the AWE64 or the 32 a better card for Windows?
or
2. Put the SBPro in one slot and the Soundscape in the other, linking the 2 externally with an audio jack in and out of their line ports. Use like this in DOS, and only enable the Soundscape in Win98, disabling the SBPro in Windows. I have used this set up previously in my Pentium Pro and it works well enough. In which case selloff the AWE64 value and SB32
Much thanks for your help
