I have tried all drivers I could get my hands on and all versions of OpenAL32.dll I could find on the web. The sound will start missing voices after about 5 minutes. Every sound can be affected like reloads, pickups etc. The console in game shows that everything is fine. AlCapsViewer is good as well. I have used EFX and it is okay but I would really like to find out what is wrong with it if possible. Other games are not affected. I find it strange because it used to work for me a few years ago. Is this a common problem? I plan to test in W10 later on, but W7 is my main retro system. Thanks for any help.

Yes I am using the latest Daniel K drivers and I tried all prior versions. Do you have any other ideas about what it could be?

I think it is because I'm playing Lost Mission in the original Doom 3. I figured if EFX worked then EAX should work but now I'm not sure. I'll test some more.

Have you installed them correctly? Because the behaviour you're reporting is the one of the basic Windows driver.

I believe so. It's pretty foolproof to install in W7. Just click the boxes and install. I uninstalled just the driver and reinstalled it as well. Everything else works so far. Been playing Mafia with Dsound for hours. It must be a bug with running Lost Mission in the original Doom 3 engine since it was made for BFG.

You must enable the installation of not signed drivers via the reg key.....because they're NOT signed, being NOT from Creative.

But it's *exe patcher* for OpenAL Soft, not Creative OpenAL (I think no one tested it with Creative OpenAL, of course you can try 😁 )

A couple of years ago, I played the original DooM3 on Windows 11 with X-Fi Titanium HD (PCI-e).
What kind of Fatality do you have?
PCI or PCI-e?

From what I know, the toughest test for Creative cards is the Unreal tournament 2004 with the mandatory ‘X-Fi patch’ installed.

An hour or two will show how well your sound card can handle the load.

If you have a Creative card I remember that the OpenAL router (OpenAL32.dll by default) just points to the SPECIFIC Creative driver, CT_OAL.dll.
The best solution today is to:
1) unplug the Creative card
2) use OpenAL Soft, without any DLL router, just renaming soft_oal.dll to openal32.dll. It works in the 99% of the cases (you can still use the Router installer from Creative, to get openal32.dll and wrap_oal.dll, a simple OpenAL implementation for a DirectSound device but OpenAL Soft is totally superior unless you play the original STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl where sometimes you lose the audio /music and must press ESC 2 times - game->menu->game - to solve.....or swotch to a modern X-Ray engine version of SoC like OGSR or OpenXRay or IXRay, etc. )

Doom 3 (the original 2004 one) and Quake 4 need the patcher named before, just to patch a bug. THEN you can use OpenAL Soft "CPU" driver.
But today I prefer RBDoom3BFG to play Doom3, and it use MicroSoft XAudio, so no need of OpenAL 😀

You can use OpenAL Soft as an alternative to ALchemy too, to get back EAX in DirectSound games, through DSOAL -> https://github.com/kcat/dsoal/releases (this package has already included a rolling release of OpenAL Soft)
