I've been working for the past couple days on and off on trying to get T7G to work on my XP machine. I was attempting to use the beta player and the other options i had available before using dosbox, but all attempts were proven pointless.
I actually had the game running using the beta player, but would always get to the same part in the intro (where i believe it is Ego who stands in front of the house, just after the narrator states that Stauf had a vision to build it) and the game crashes.
Over this time ive have a few different errors, using the beta player at this point i would get the error "Unknown asset type -- Please restart". While using DOSbox the game ran REALLY choppy and, of course, crashed at the identical spot. This time i got the error Error: File is not a VDX file, and was punted back to the dospromt.
Any ideas? I have searched these forums quite a bit looking for my answer and hope y'all can help. 😀

Also forgot, the DOSbox installation attempt played with no intro sound as if i had mounted the ISO with 120% or daemon, but a little worse as there was nothing beside dialog sound until the opening movie.

Read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox (and don't just read it - follow it too).

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

So i re-installed following the above suggestion to a T. This time it ran just as before (choppy and slow) and cut off at the Identical point as both previous versions of the install.

I mounted my C and D drives (which are the correct names and not substituted by other letters) just as in the 60 second guide. I did the install (from the second disc) by going through the path to the file which was

c:\id\t7g\install.

There were two significant changes from the previous DOSbox attempt, which was mounted in a different spot at the time. One being that the sound had returned to the start menu, and two being the error i received upon crashing (note it is at the identical spot in every instance of running the game, DOSbox or not, Just as the game is about to start from the opening movie). The new Error read as such

"Error : GJD File System Error -- Aborting"

Sound and music were all configured within the install generically with the soundblaster 2 settings that are recommended during the install.
I had a previous problem while adjusting to DOSbox itself, and received an Error that said "Mscdex Not installed", which was fixed with

" mount d "D:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl" "

This was a previous mount though, and i would assume would not be affecting the mount that i have currently done (which is identical to the one in the 60 Seconds Guide to DOSbox).

Thanks for any input you all may have!

EDIT:
Forgot something big in my haste... There was an error, after pulling up the start menu, that involved me having to put the second disc back into my drive after attempting to start my game. The second disc is the install disc and i was under the assumption that the game would not run without the first disc in the drive (and the iso is not mounted virtually, but i am able to do so). After selecting New Game it then promted me to insert the second disc again, played through the normal movie and crashed in the same spot as usual.

Minor update.. The bug that asks me to put in the second CD was just that, a bug. I can press cancel 2x and get it to continue. But i still get the VDX file error. Ive been trying to install the 1.30 patch update, but that does not seem to work either.
The odd thing is that the game crashes at the same spot no matter if its in DOSbox or the win32 beta player by Tbyte. Im starting to wonder if it is a corrupt image file on my disc, but its driving me insane~!

Eh? What? Shouldn't the install be run from drive D?

My bad i must have hit C, when it fact the install does run from D. Your correct, was a blunder on my part.
The correct command i used was
D:\install

Okay... I assume you have the 2 original CD's. Make CD-images of both discs, preferably in CUE/BIN format. Then mount BOTH images using the imgmount command.

imgmount D "\path\to\image1.cue" "\path\to\image2.cue" -t iso.

Watch the DOSBox console window, and notice how CTRL-F4 allows you to swap between the 2 images.

Delete the current installation on your virtual C-drive, mount C & D, install, and when the game asks for disc #2, simply hit CTRL-F4.

Still running identical as before =\

"File is not a VDX file." - reoccurring error

Crash still in the same spot after doing the mount just as you showed me. Also attempted all these scenarios on a slightly older laptop, and still no luck.

Yeah, those are the links for the beta player/s which also seem to crash at the same point. You wouldn't believe how many different places i've looked to get this working ><.
Been all over the t7g3.com forums etc.
Just downright Annoying 🙁

And what conclusion do make when some people seem to be able to play i, and you don't?

I have no clue what to think of other people being able to play T7G and it completely failing on my pc. Since its always at the same part in the game, right as the intro video finishes and where i would assume that the game engine itself boots, the only possible answer could be that maybe i have some corrupt files of some sort, or my D drive is failing at one point or another.
Other than that, I'm at a total loss for ideas (after trying for upwards of 10 hours spread over a few days)...

edit: As far as other people being able to get it to work, i have yet to see any posters with a similar problem (the only one ive seen with the VDX file error would be Sushi on the t7g3.com forums) come back and say they have actually been able to get it to work afterward.

I just noticed the two other sites you put up on your previous post, and have found another route to try in order to fix this.. It involves the files t7gfix3.zip on the first new site... will keep you posted.

Found out those fix files weren't any different from what i currently had, just under different names.. back to the drawing board i guess...

I would really have an easier time figuring this out if i could skip the intro movie. Is there anyway someone can provide a save game file, with a tip on installing it?
This might help a ton! Im thinking the error occurs on the transition from movie to game, so if i could jump straight to the game it might be beneficial.

For what it's worth, I just tried T7G here and experience the same behaviour, with a VDX error after the credits intro movie. Once the error occurs, trying to run T7G again will cause the error to occur instantly until the disk cache is cycled using ctrl+f4, at which point it will play through the intro movie again and then dump me back out at the same point. Everything is being run from imgmount images. The second disk had some uncorrectable errors, but they occurred well into the CD audio portion of the disk, and this part of the game uses disc 1.

Yes, it’s my fault.

This issue occurs even if autoexec.bat/config.sys files exist in the root. I was also not able to get the installer to run correctly (see this thread, which I used to work around that issue). I have tried both with the original version and the 1.3-patched version.

FWIW, it sounds like there is more than one CD release of T7G. I am using images that were taken from the original 2-disc 1992 release, which are marked IFPI L239 7THGUEST1RE R5J and 7THGUEST2RE2 R1H MFD BY JVC.

Yes, it’s my fault.
