Hi

So, I installed my original 4-CD version of Tex Murphy: Overseer the other day, and I'm trying to find out a bit more about the DVD version. I understand that was released in the States only...? I don't think it came out in the UK. The versions sold on Steam and GOG are the DVD versions, which I know have cleaner and higher res FMV videos. No scanlines. I presume they include some pre-installed patches/fixes as well? I would like to get those higher res videos working with my installed version, along with any patches/fixes, if that's possible? Or is there a way of converting the original CD versions to match the DVD version? I know there's a guide for converting the CD version to a DVD disc, but that doesn't guide you on how to install it so it plays from the HDD. Plus, my Win98 PC doesn't have a DVD drive. Yet.

Thanks

Overseer came out simultaneously on CD and DVD, the original release included them both. You may want to check this thread out:

Huh. I had no idea they came out at the same time. Or that both versions were included. I could be wrong, but I think the only release to come out in the UK was the regular CD version part of the Premiere Collection.

Okay, I have everything you suggested except for DVDExpress. That one seems a bit elusive now.

Is Mediamatics DVDExpress definitely needed? Or is there an alternative? Any links I've come across for it appear to be dead.

Any suggestions regarding this? I've still been unable to find DVDExpress; only an update. So unless there's an alternative that works...?

Now that I’ve managed to get/find the tools needed, and reinstalled Overseer again with the update (1.04), does using those tools actually help with converting the FMVs to MPEG/DVD quality, or are they purely for converting the CD versions to a DVD to avoid disc swapping?
The latter I’m not too fussed about (yet). What I am unsure about is the process of getting the higher quality videos.

So, I installed my original 4-CD version of Tex Murphy:

Interesting. My version is 5 CDs. I am from UK too.

Oh, I think it is 5 CDs actually. My mistake.

I've come back to this as I still haven't solved this problem. Going through some threads, I'm still not sure if I'm supposed to be converting my CD version to the DVD version...? And that the steps outlined in Tex Murpy Overseer DVD Edition Being a Pain will only work if using the DVD version...? I'm guessing that's the case. I installed everything suggested, but there's no change. And there's certainly no 'DVD Express option from within Overseer's settings menu'. Again, I'm guessing this refers to the Hardware/Software options...?

I played a lot with the DVD version of Overseer decades ago.

IIRC, you just need to install the DVD version, and have a MPEG-2 (and AC-3 ? I can't remember) decoders enabled. Not the directshow one, but a VfW one.

Back in the days, it worked great with a version of ffdshow tryouts old enough to run on Windows 98SE:

https://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

(I had a lot of troubles outside of Windows 98)

Failing that, you could try Windows XP or later, still with ffdshow tryouts DirectShow and VfW decoders for MPEG-2 video enabled. But the game really preferred Windows 98SE.

I've never seen that DVD Express menu. All versions of the game that I could get were already patched to work with any MPEG-2 software decoder through VfW (Video for Windows).

Some MPEG2 games I tried run with a combination of Elecard MPEG player and LAV Audio. If you are on WIn98, you will need some other audio decoder maybe

Okay, thanks for confirming. 😀 So I'll need to look up how to convert my CD version to DVD and install that. So far I've installed Mediamatics DVD Express (4, I believe...?) and installed Elecard MPEG Decoder 2.0 and K-Lite 3.4.5 Full as per the other thread.

But why convert at all ? The DVD version has an installer, and different data files anyway.

ffdshow tryouts is all-in-one, including audio codecs. K-Lite tends to wreck systems...

Being on the topic, does anybody have a copy of the newer DVD Express software? I used one which couldn't uninstall itself and obviously wrecked the entire MPEG2 setup

To be honest, it would be easier to track down a copy of the DVD version. Saying that though, I don’t think I’ll be able to get it to work at the moment. I lack a DVD drive. I’m going to try my brother’s portable DVD drive, though I suspect it’s going to need specific drivers, which don’t exist for 98 as it’s modern. Failing that, I’m kind of screwed at the moment. I can’t copy a DVD image to a USB either as it’ll be over 4GB. Although I could try copying the contents and see if that works.

I don’t recall having any issues yet with K-Lite.

I’m curious about this, too. I’ve not found many copies online and the latest I have managed to find is about 4.0, I think.

Its better than 2.03 that I have. That version turned videos black and white

Can't you use daemon tools 3.47 and mount the dvd ISO ?

Edit: posted before reading, my bad.

Okay, so far, copying the DVD files individually to my FAT32 pen drive, and from my pen drive to the 98 machine, is working. Going to break it down in stages as copying the DATA folder with everything will take it forever.
