I saw this listed on eBay for 5$ and I grabbed it, only to see what wavetable daughterboard it had!
to my surprice it is a tiny Yamaha daughterboard with the YMF704C-S chip...
any info on that? is it any good? I know it is tiny, but it bears the Yamaha name on it 😀 (the ISA card itself uses the YMF719-S chip)

I presume this is a Yamaha OPL4 chip. As printed on it, it should be General Midi but not GS compatible. I wonder where the sound banks / sample Roms are, but maybe this chip uses some kind of early software synthesis like the later XG models, or it's somehow intergrated, but I'm not very familiar with that.
The host card was quite common, as it was build in in much oem systems. The codec chip is called "Yamaha OPL3-SAx" and thats also the name where you should find the respective dos drivers (part of the win3.1. driver package). It combines good FM sound with some kind of soundblaster compability ( I think SBpro) which is also okay. It's a little bit noisy and loud so you have to experiment with the dos mixer utility the driver comes with. It needs a line in the autoexec.bat to initialize (maybe config.sys too?) but I don't remember if it uses a tsr or not.
If you could make a record of some well known GM game music it would be interesting to hear how it sounds like.

I am 95% certain that this is indeed an OPL4 , but I will check some more . Will also compare it against a SW60XG card when I get to install it

🤣 I had replied there back then... I wonder how much sample data is inside the chip... in windows midi can be done in doftware, but I will test in pure DOS
I have three of them too. Two with YMF704C-S chip and one with YMF704B-S. And yes, this is OPL4-FM. All three cards comes to me with I-A16C cards (OEM ISA Vibra 16C by Asus.)
