I have two sound cards in my retro computer: a Sound Blaster Live! CT4780 and a Yamaha YMF724. I can pass the Yamaha's output into the Live by connecting it to the Live's line-in jack, but I'd prefer to send the Yamaha's digital S/PDIF output to one of the Live's S/PDIF inputs. And that's where things get interesting.

After doing a lot of testing today, I've concluded that my SBLive CT4780's S/PDIF inputs only accept 44.1 KHz input, and don't produce any sound when connected to the 48 KHz signal from the Yamaha card. This seems like a rather silly design decision, since the Live internally resamples everything to 48 KHz, but the fact remains that it plays back audio from my CD drive, but not from the Yamaha card. (If anyone's interested, I can provide the details of how I reached this conclusion.)

So this leaves me with a couple of questions:

  • Is there a driver setting somewhere that can configure the Live to accept 48 KHz input over S/PDIF? I haven't found one, but it would be very convenient if one exists and I just missed it.
  • Could I solve this problem by upgrading to an Audigy 2 ZS? I found this from 21 years ago, where someone successfully connected the (presumably 48 KHz) S/PDIF output of a Live to the S/PDIF input of an Audigy 2 ZS. Can anyone here confirm that the Audigy 2 ZS can take 48 KHz S/PDIF input?

I'm interested) Have you tested the YMF724's SPDIF 48kHz output on other devices?

I have Audigy 2 ZS, but I never really thought about the S/PDIF samplerates.
As far as I recall, 44.1/48/96 kHz S/PDIF inputs are supported, but I'll double-check that.

However, if you are targeting Windows 9x and VxD drivers, the Audigy 2 ZS is not the best choice.
Audigy 2ZS VXD driver has limited capabilities compared to WDM driver (no S/PDIF inputs).
For an upgrade, I would choose the Audigy 2 (non-ZS), since it has full VxD driver.
