I had a cyrix mII PR233 (200MHz) which i did overclock to 225MHz on my pcchips m571! Some years later I did also buy for pennies a later one, not sure if it was a 300 or 333, but was disappointed it was basically the same clock as what I’d already had out of the pr233

I paired my cyrix with a 12MB voodoo2 and at the time I thought it was great. But I probably only had it for 6-9 months before upgrading to a k6-2 and a TNT2

Yep, sounds like you had a MII PR300, identical to 6x86MX PR300, which indeed ran at 233MHz, a full 8MHz upgrade on your old one!

I guess you might have tried overclocking it, could probably have got 266MHz stable but I can see why you were disappointed.

Few days ago I took ownership of a 1996 Socket 7 machine.

First time owning a 120MHz 6x86 (although way back I had a 6x86MX PR300).

What surprises me about this chip is that its FPU performance is really quite serviceable; it's obviously not as good as a Pentium, but it's not *shockingly* slower, from my early benches I think mine behaves somewhere between a Pentium 75 and P90 in FPU heavy tasks. Which isn't amazing for its clock, but from the narrative you'd have thought these things play quake like a DX4-100 .

Yeah I find the FPU can be as fast as real clockspeed Pent in a lot of stuff, the thing it doesn't do is the interleave clocks with integer core hack that ID discovered in Pentium and used to advantage in Quake. So it seems bad in quake engine stuff mainly. There are many other games which are more integer heavy and it will seem to perform it's PR Rating.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

What aspect of the Cyrix systems performance were you dissatisfied with, to the point that you upgraded to a K6-2? What games could the K6-2 + TNT run well that the Cyrix+Voodoo2 couldn't?

Plan your life wisely, you'll be dead before you know it.
