Hello, I am have an issue running QG4 with gus correctly.

I used the custom dosbox install to install from my CD.
I then copy the sierra Gus patch for QG4 into the directory.

I run dosbox and manually edit the resource.cfg pointing to the gus drvs.
I then run the loadpats to load the GUS instruments.

I get amazing Gus music for the sierra fanfare, and intro.
Then, when loading into the cave it always crashes, with this error in the console, illegal descriptor type 0 for int D.

If I change the driver for sound to the standard DACBLAST for soundblaster I can run the game with the great GUS music, but most of the sound fx don't play or when they do they sound like crappy adlib.

If I run with adlib music and soundblaster sound I get decent sound fx but crappy music. Has anyone else run into this, and is there a way to get this to work.

Some of the games didn't come with native GUS support. The patch on that page gives a gus "upgrade" for quest for glory iv, gabriel knight, pq4, and another I think.

Anyways, the music is awesome, much better than general midi. And it works up to the crash when using the gusdac for sfx, or it works for the whole game sans sfx when using dacblast.

I have a specific folder mounted as my C:\drive
Inside there I have a standard GUS installation
and a propats installation.

You're the collector from Sierra Help? I'm sure you already know this, but here is the setup.

They mount as C:\UltraSND and C:\Ultrsnd1 respectively.
I switch back and forth between them depending on how they sound, the propats instruments are sometimes off I find.

I have run plenty of other games with GUS, including DOOM. Sounds awesome. For some specific games QFGIV, GK1 etc, there is the GUS patch, I think it's on your page as well.

So I setup the QG4 Anth, and then load my "test" enviornment in my dbox front end. This gives me a default C:\ drive and opens into the gus midi program, to make sure that the sound is working.

I run the install for the GUS patch located in the previous post. Then to load the patch addresses in memory (I assume) I do loadpats -iqg4.ini and it loads the patches. I edit the resource.cfg to point to the GUSMIDI and GUSDAC, and start the game. Amazing music, with the crashes mentioned above.

Oh and Another note, I run this scenario in several builds of .72 and same crash on all of them.

Please be explicit about what you are doing (the exact mount commands
and the relevant subdirectories) as this makes no sense.
Also include how you installed the respective applications/games and the
mountings used back then.

That's a misunderstanding.
I have two setups of Gravis, I set them as the default gravis directory when I want, I don't use both at the same time. 9 times out of 10 i use the ultrasnd.

The Ultrasound setup is not at issue here, I use it in a ton of games and it works fine.
The use of the gravis upgrade with this specific game crashes the emulator.

Also I have tested the install two ways. Both the same setup, with the CD mounted in windows. DOSBox is given that CDROM drive as DRIVE E:
1 way I used the Custome Quest for Glory Collection DosBox installer.
The other, I simply copied the qg4 folder.

This same patch works on a couple of other games, I think I will find my Gabriel Knight CD, and see if the patches will run with that game.

That's a misunderstanding.

No it isn't, you still didn't write the exact mountings but describe in rather
unspecific words that you're using some directory here, some there.
Also if you're assuming that "it's fine because it works with other stuff"
then nobody surely won't bother with this issue any further.

Is there a reason you are so hostile?

I Am using the DOSBOX LOADER frontend.

Here is for Gabriel Knight 1 CD which I am testing

I have a directory that I mount as C:\
A subdirectory in C:\ is ULTRASND, from a complete and working Gravis Install. In the Frontend, the gravis directory is set to C:\UlTRASND upon load.

I have a test.conf, that loads me into C:\ and starts the playmidi in the gravis directory, I then loads several midis and play them.

Still in the C:\ Directory
I have my CDROM mounted as E:

I switch to E:\ and run install.exe from my CD-ROM.

It is installed to C:\SIERRA\GK1CD

I have a folder called TEST under C:\ with the updated gravis unzipped.
I copy all files into C:\SIERRA\GKCD
I then loadpats -igk1.ini
It loads the instruments.

I then edit resource.cfg. to point the soundcard to gusmidi and gusdac for the audio and sound drivers.

When I do this for QG4 it crashes where I already mentioned. I am about to test Gabriel Knight, and will return with results.

Again... why so hostile? I am not yelling, or complaining, or forcing you to do anything, if you can help... Great, if not, no big deal. Relax

A lot of times the problems are due to wrong mounting. I think in 90% of the cases.
Hence we want to see "proof". you are refusing this proof and might be wasting our time because we can't confirm that part being right.

Woah, I'm not refusing anything. I thought I had explained the setup enough, and thought he misunderstood what I had wrote. I'm not trying to cause problems, but I feel hostility.

UPDATE.

Except for some stuttering, the GUS patch method works well with Gabriel Knight 1 CD-ROM version.

Yes, it's a waste of time discussing with somebody if the facts are not clear.
I'm sure the information you posted now may help collector to give you an advice.

Again, that's why I said misunderstanding. I thought I was clear enough, and I guess I wasn't, sorry. But still no reason to be so hostile. Your social skills are of the charts. Sorry to waste your time with a question.

That is not how it works. Exagarating (just a tiny bit), this is what is going on here:

wd has coded major parts of DOSBox. When you claim that something in DOSBox is not working, you are (indirectly) calling him a 2nd rate programmer. His only defence is to prove that you are the one doing it wrong. And for that he needs hard facts, not a 10 page novel from you about what you think you did.

And as Qbix (another of the DOSBox coders) points out, 90% of all the problems we see here are caused by people not mounting and installing correctly.

It often amazes me why people insists on writing a 2 page story about what they think is wrong, instead of simply posting 5 lines of text: 2 lines with the mount'ings, 1 line with the command used for installing, and 1 line with info on how sound was configured.

That's the misunderstanding then maybe, as i don't care about social skills on a tech oriented forum.

If anything I was inferring that the gus patch wasn't working.

Look, dosbox is amazing, ever since my old backup 486 setup died, this is the only way I can run my old classics. I can post a picture of my sierra and lucasarts collections if you want.

This section of the forum was for game-specific problems, so I posted one. Nowhere and in no way am I inferring that anyone is inferior at what they were doing. I had something not work, and I posted it, simple as that. If feedback isn't wanted, then remove this forum?

Again, I love the program, and love being able to play my old games.

Social skills are always important. I am in tech-related work myself. I am 3d Modeler and Texture Artist... and I wouldn't get anywhere I treated people that way, even if I deal with a complex 3d program and scripting daily.

Ahh - work! Then you get paid to play nice with the clients. Not so here. You should read some of the stuff linked to in my signature for enlightenment.

Actually thanks to the economic crunch I am without full-time work right now. So any projects I work on for portfolio or friends/family is completely unpaid. Friends, and old classmates ask questions on Maya and whatnot all the time, and I never treat them like they are inferior or a waste of my time, when they have question on what I do.

BTW, an "enlightened" person doesn't treat anyone poorly.
