I'm a total noob to this whole thing but here's my problem. I'm trying to get spectre vr to run through DOSbox ver 0.73. When I try to run the exe file "SVRCD" in dos box I get this message saying "This is a windows 16-bit executable". I've checked the compatiblity list for spectre VR and it says it's supported. I don't get it. If I'm forgetting to mention anything please tell me.

Spectre VR was released for DOS and for Windows 3.x (16-bit Windows). You obviously have the latter version. Install Windows 3.1 inside DOSBox and you should be able to run it.

How exactly do I do that? I know that may be a dumb question. I might already know how, I'm just not sure. Also isn't windows 3.1 a different operating system?

First you actually need a copy of Windows 3.x. (That's 3.0, 3.1 or 3.11). These can often be found on eBay for around $5 for a set of floppies (more for the sealed, boxed version). The easiest way to install then is to copy the contents of all floppies into a single folder, mount that into DOSBox to drive A:, mount another folder as DOSBox drive C: and run A:\setup.exe inside DOSBox. A minute or two later, you have a working install of Windows 3.11 inside DOSBox. From inside that, you can install Spectre VR.

If it's the 32-bit version of Windows XP, you should be able to run the program directly in most cases. No need for DOSBox.

How can I tell if I have the 32-bit version?

If you don't know what you have, you have the 32-bit version.

I did try running the the game without DOSbox. I get an error message saying:

"SVRCD caused a general protection fault in
module <unknown>040F:E1143(between here there was a 3/4 and some squares. I don't know how to type them exactly)SVRCD will close"

The 32-bit version outnumbers the 64-bit version significantly. If you did have the 64-bit version, you'd very likely be aware of it. (To be honest, I've never encountered an install of the 64-bit version myself).

That's the error message that says very little. Try running the game in Windows 95 compatibility mode (right-click the shortcut or the exe file, and select the "compatibility" tab. You can then tell Windows to run it as if it were an older version. You can also try some of the other options to see if it makes a difference).

How do I play the DOS version? I have the cd for the game.

Also I just started getting this error message saying "windows must be in 256 colors" I enabled it to do that and it launched. But then it asked for a serial number thats "on the case", and there's no number. I know you can't help me with that, so I exited out and when I tried loading up the game again I would get that error message but with a different 2nd line each time. And I did also try running it in windows 95 compatibility, didn't work.
