3Dbench v1.0 results
Clock | ISA | VLB
-----------------------------
25 MHz : 9.8 FPS | 11.4 FPS
33 MHz : 13.1 FPS | 15.3 FPS
40 MHz : 15.8 FPS | 18.5 FPS

Thank you so much!!! 😀

13.1 for a DX-33 was exactly what I estimated. Very good to know... Looks like my table is pretty accurate with the estimated "net speed results".

Regarding ISA vs. VLB (I still can't believe you have a 386 with VLB that's awesome...)

The improvement is actually quite impressive. We are talking around 17% better performance! Just shows that ISA was holding back the 386DX by quite a bit...

If not, will it run in Windows or the DOS that's installed with Windows?

Yes it will!

I tried a W98SE boot disk and also one made in W7.

True! I guess I'm so used to modern FPS readings that less than 3 FPS feels like something that could fit in a margin of error.
I'm not even sure anymore that the S3 864 is faster at all. S3 864 has 64-bit internal bus but standard VGA cannot benefit from it. VESA VBE functions and Windows (with proper drivers) would definitely benefit from it but not plain VGA.

Cheers! Will try my 486 DX4-100 maybe tonight even 😀

np, if I get a util that can display the extra info I will post here... the IBM bios displays only memory count on startup, no hardware config whatsoever... Also the bios is limited to the extreme basics too and you use a boot-disk to enter it... typical brand-name bios on the era 😁

here is the machine (2123 pro PS1 model)

Very nice!

I will revisit the Slot 1 system for my project and use your data. I now have a much better idea of what tests I need to run to show some scaling.

The FSB scaling approach I used on the SS7 system is much better and needs a lot less tests.

Glad I can help 😀

If you also need a Cx 5x86 system result please let me know...or from a very early 486 system with a 25mhz 486 😉

If you can do that, that would be awesome!

RG100 has allready provided a score for a 486 25 and 33 MHz but the more data the better!

Sorry just now saw your post!

This is because version 1.0 doesn't work well on Pentium and faster. Version 1.0c should be used on Pentiums and faster.

However 1.0c has issues on really slow machines (results are way to high)...

I am working on a nice sheet and will get a 3dbench database going! It should be good. I am currently entering all the data from this thread and then we can go nuts with benching!

Watch the space!

A couple of more 486 benchmarks:

AMD-5x86-33-4-133-Compaq-kein anung-Compaq-256k-EISA-Elsa Winner 1000 S3 928 MX440-2MB-Defaults-Amigaz-62.5

Cyrix-5x86-33-3-100-Asus-PVI-486SP3-SiS 496-256k-PCI-S3 Virge GX-4MB-Defaults-Amigaz-66.6

The above system is a screamer but get's spanked by my VLB systems because of the poor PCI chipset

I've 2 old retro 486 machine, here's the results:

1.QDI v4p895p3 smt v5.0 mobo (opti895 chipset), am5x86-P75 at 150 (3x50), 256kb L2 cache, 16 mb ram (2x8 edo at fpm mode), Diamond Stealth 64 Vram (S3 964 Chipset) 2Mb Vlb, Ms-Dos 7.1 (win95osr2); 90.9 fps

2. Dataexpert Exp4044 256kb l2 cache(opti895 chipset too, but doesn't support write back cache and L2 cache instable 40 and 50 Mhz fsb, so i stuck at 33Mhz), am486dx2-66@100 (8kb write trough l1 cache, 3x33 strange dx2 doesn't work 2x multi, maybe the mobo's bios bug), 16 mb fpm ram, S3 805p 1 Mb vlb, Ms-Dos 6.22; 66.6 fps
