Late in the evening I finally remembered that I had some Jetway SS7 board that wouldn't POST, so I dug it up and found a 32-bit EEPROM on it.
Put it in one of those RTL8139D cards and tried UniFlash -PCIROM, with no luck (while experimenting I also managed to get a Biostar socket7 board stuck at "Verifying DMI pool data...", just to keep this thread alive 😜 ).
At this point I had no choice - I had to use my preciouss ASUS P2B-D/1.06/D03 for my first hotflash ever. Fortunately everything went great, so I now have my 486 board back, alive and kicking with a newer BIOS version 😁 .
