Late in the evening I finally remembered that I had some Jetway SS7 board that wouldn't POST, so I dug it up and found a 32-bit EEPROM on it.

Put it in one of those RTL8139D cards and tried UniFlash -PCIROM, with no luck (while experimenting I also managed to get a Biostar socket7 board stuck at "Verifying DMI pool data...", just to keep this thread alive 😜 ).

At this point I had no choice - I had to use my preciouss ASUS P2B-D/1.06/D03 for my first hotflash ever. Fortunately everything went great, so I now have my 486 board back, alive and kicking with a newer BIOS version 😁 .

Unfortunately I don't have another PCI socket3 board with AWARD BIOS

It doesn't have to be a PCI Socket 3 board to do a hotflash... it can be any kind of board that uses a similar type of flash chip. Sometimes it can be done with the boot ROM socket on a network card too, if you can find a NIC with the write-protect disabled.

Is it possible to use old NIC's to flash a motherboard BIOS chip??
If so, that would be AWESOME!

I really dislike the idea of having to swap chips when the computer is running.
