Hey what's up guys! Been playing with Master of Orion 2 lately ( bought on GOG ), a great game, having a blast playing it again after all these years.

I was wondering why there is a midi music setting in the setup file. That is considering there is seemingly no midi music whatsoever in the game. All the music is low quality PCM audio ( 22khz 8bit Stereo).

It came to my mind that it might be because the game uses Miles Design Audio Interface which might use a generic SetSound application.
Anyway this prompted me on a quest to see if the game could be modded for better audio. I extracted the music library from the LBX archives used by the game and tried replacing the music files with higher quality files. That does not quite work out of the box. If I try 16 bit PCM, it result in horrible screeching noise. IF I leave 8 bit but use 44 khz, it simply plays twice slower. Seems there is no way around that unless maybe the game could somehow be patched with a fresher version of the sound drivers it uses which might allow higher bit rate audio.

I really do not know much about Miles Design Audio Interface but I though it might be worth a shot to post this here in case someone has an idea. The horrible PCM quality is really the part that did not age so well with this game. Imho

What a fantastic game. The hours my brother has sank in it, the ones I'd just sit there and watch. The hours I myself sank into it, reading the manual page to page...
I do agree with you, it's music hasn't aged particularly well, although I love the music tracks themselves. How did you get higher quality music files? Do they exist inside the game data?

Well, no they don't. I just re sampled the files with Audacity so I did not actually improve their actual quality.
But providing the game engine could run Higher bitrate wav files ( 44khz 16 bit aka CD format would be golden ) there are several possibilities.

1. Remaster the original files. Using filters to remove the quantization noise and restore the high frequencies with some DSP plugins could put a fresh shine on the old music.
2. A skilled person could do high quality remix of the music.
3. I suppose the author of the original music originally had higher quality recordings of the music. If With some far fetched luck, those were archived and the gods or retro gaming are kind, they could be restored to us.

Still, this all means nothing unless the game engine can be made to play higher bit rate PCM.

You are talking about the DOS version I guess? I didn't know for years that there even was one, when I tried it some time ago I found the sound quality to be inferior to the Windows version, among other things. So try that if you haven't already.

Ironically, only the DOS version works on my modern (Win 7) PC, thanks to DOSBOX, but good call none the less. I will try installing it on one of my retro machines when I get the chance.

I just installed that DOS version again. Yeah, that is quite astonishingly bad. The multiplayer community can go ahead and play that version, I certainly won't 😀
