i can run v0.60 very well on my machine, which is:
Windows 2000 SP4
Pentium 2 450MHz
256 MB ram
S3 Virge Dx/Gx video card
Creative AWE 64 sound card
DirectX 8.0

i wanted to try 0.61, but it doesn't work, starting it will bring the debugging console of dosbox, then the frame of dosbox screen, and inside it a copy of the screen of what was behind it, not the dosbox command screen. but it accepts command, as typing "exit [return]" will make it exit...

i tried putting other machines (vga, cga, auto) and render method (surface, overlay, opengl) the same result for the first too, and complete computer block for opengl...

why is this happening? with new versions, you execlude old machines from running dosbox?

you could have searched the forum.

Anyway 0.61 is a bit picky about your videocard. (it wants a proper opengl implementation no matter which output you select)

This will be fixed in the next version

Was this line really necissairy ? You should be grateful for dosbox.

i am grateful to dosbox, but i would still be more grateful if it does its intended work on old 450MHz + machines too.

so,
i really thank you for the great job in making dosbox...

I guess my problem is about the same.
When I click the dosbox executable, I get the MSDOS box and the Windows box. The windows one is all empty and the Dos one stops after MIDI opened device:WIN32

Same reason? My video card too old, eh?
It's an old P2 266 mhz I'm running it on.

It's amazing by the way that windows programs are so slow anyway, that they can't run DOS games even at computers of several times the speed of the ones the games really were made to be played on.

Try different video drivers and SDL.DLL. But 266 Mhz processor is too slow for more complicated games anyway. PC XT games will work, but forget protected mode games.
I hope that by "empty" you do not mean black screen with command line - this is normal, there are no fancy menus and windows. The command line rules. 😀

It is not about Windows, DOS based emulator would be a bit quicker (less overhead), but nothing more.
Well, just realize that the last time that DOS game run on a dedicated hardware (there was a real piece of silicon 😀 ). Now it is being emulated by a program on another computer. And that emulated processor must then run the original game. This is *very* ineffective usage of the computer power, but there is no way around (unless we return to the usage of the old hardware).
