All the answers I could find referred to DOSBox fixes. Yes my system is faster than the original requirements for the game, but it plays just fine otherwise. Basically, the joystick doesn't work. Pull back or turn right, nothing. Left & forward work fine, except that it never returns to center. It locks at the last level. The coolie hat is similar, push forward and it registers as if I'm holding it ther. Same thing with right or back. Can't get left to register at all.
I originally thought it was the system speed with an AWE32 joystick port. I thought I needed a speed adjustable port (Thrustmaster ACM or Gravis Eliminator.) But reading up on the AWE64 & AWE32 ports, they are supposed to be auto-adjusting. To attempt to fix the issue, I've disabled the cache's and adjusted the FSB as low as I can (50Mhz.) The issue stays the same - except that calibrations made on different speeds will result in much different results. It's like the game is reading the joystick sporadically, or incorrectly. Almost like it's allowing a variable to only be adjusted in one direction (smaller.)
Wing Commander Armada is the only game (so far,) that I have a problem with. Older games work just fine. Even older Origin games work fine. I've installed the patch, and it doesn't seem to help. Do I need to get the card after all (would prefer not to use the slot for that?) Is it just a case of this particular game is crappy with joysticks? Is there another patch available that actually works right? And yes, I did use the aj.exe utility to calibrate as well as the in game routine. I actually enjoy the game quite a bit (strategy, resource management, starship fighter combat.) I don't have a decent joystick on my modern system, so I'd prefer not to relegate it to DOSBox. Even though Wing Commander 1 & 2 are already there because I only own the floppy versions. I've been reading it has similar problems in DOSBox anyways. Shoot, the joystick works just fine with WC1&2, it just plays way to fast. Even with cache disabled, though I haven't tried no cache and 50Mhz. I haven't yet been able to find a software method to disable cache that doesn't crash the system (ICD & ICE crash the system.)
Any help, suggestions, hints, and/or utilities appreciated 😀
