Have you ever noticed that some games seem to age better than others?

For instance, whenever a new tech comes along (FMV cutscenes in games, 3D, etc) the first games to use the technology almost always seem to look unbearably primitive down the line, even if at the time it seemed great.
I'm not fond of most games that have FMV, the acting is usually horrible and video quality is poor. Likewise, certain early 3d games look worse than others.

I personally think the original Diablo and RPGs that use the Infinity Engine look better than very early 3D games. Old school 2D adventure games, as well. Is this just a matter of personal taste, or do the rest of you feel this way?

Generally, I prefer gameplay over graphics but sometimes I like my eye-candy as well. I remember playing an old Intellivision game with a friend that had really primitive graphics but it was a blast to play. I can't recall the name of it, but you each had a fleet of 5 ships (I think) and had to capture the other guys port.

Shoot'em up scrollers like Tyrian

I have never heard anyone complain about the graphics or game play, for a game its age it still gets lots of attention.

Pinball games like Pinball Illusions

Still the best pinball game?

American McGee's Alice (2000) still looks fresh to me.

I'm partial to Pinball Extreme but I think the same company made Pinball Illusions.
But yes, those are pretty nice.

I've not played Tyrian or Alice (although I think I have a copy of Alice somewhere). I recall Alice as looking pretty decent from screenshots.

You're missing out on something big, tell you what!

I do not think its the same company. Pinball Illusions was made by Digital Illusions aka DICE.
There were many good pinball games back in the early to mid 90s though, EPIC pinball is another nice one.

I agree on Tyrian and the pinball games as well. I also consider the old point and click adventures like King quest 7, Kyrandia-hand of fate, Indiana atlantis etc still holding up well today.
As far as console games go, I'd say the Dreamcast has held up very well.

Strategy games/puzzles and adventures mostly, but some FPSs are also still decent IMHO. StarCraft, Warcraft II and III, Red Alert 2 and 3, Larry 6, 7 and 1 VGA, TIM, are the ones that comes to my mind. COD and MOH first versions, HL2, Postal 2 and FarCry are still very decent games, too, in my opinion (heck, I still play Duke3D, Doom, HL and Dark Forces and having much fun 🤣). It is not the type of game that I generally play, but Raptor is also good, even today.

Most real-time strategy games still look good (even though DOS didn't have a lot of those). C&C, Dune, Warcraft 2, Constructor still look fine for me.

Some advanced 3D games for the hardware they ran, like Mechwarrior 2 and Twinsen's Odyssey are still pretty good too.

Platformers on computers are hit or miss. Aside from the ones I've played, others doesn't seem to hold much value. Early (8/16 bit) console/arcade platformers are better on this aspect.

I think that this totally depends on whether you come back to the game often enough for you not to forget the simplicity of the graphics. Many older games of varying types, mostly 3D initially seem a bit dated but after a little playing it seems a non-issue.

On the grounds of 2D games like top downs or side scrollers, the graphics they present are images which in my opinion I never fail to appreciate. They always seem really good and vibrant even now, because as an image they have been designed to be of highest resolution and detail as possible. Desperados, and Abe's Oddysee still look as good to me today as soon as I start playing them as much as they looked good when they came out. But 3D racing games like LEGO Racers can take a few minutes to get into. However I do take them for what they are. Memory always puts a better perspective on things.

Any game with awful animations ages like milk. Blurry walls and blocky characters don't really matter.

Do not refrain from refusing to stop hindering yourself from the opposite of watching nothing other than that which is by no means porn.

I may be in the minority here but I like flat shaded 3d graphics (or pseudo 3D). Games like A-10 Cuba! or F/A-18 Hornet competed against first generation 3Dfx but look very fresh to my eye today while the latter can often seem "challenged" now - think A-10 Tank Killer II or Sabre Ace. Likewise earlier flat shaded games like World Circuit, Red Baron 1 Av-8B Harrier Assault, Aces Over the Pacific are graphically still quite appealing to me while the ambitious pixilated games of the time like Pacific Strike, 1942 Pacific Air War or F-14 Fleet Defender are somehow distracting.

I'm only talking about eye appeal, not gameplay.

Then there is the handful of original 3dfx-patched games that stand the test of time: Quake 1 with the patch, NASCAR Racing, CART Racing (Rendition Verite). While these represent the infancy of 3dfx they are still a pleasure to run through the paces...

Monolith's "Claw" still looks like a sure hit for a mobile device, and I myself deplore cellphones with all my being.

I find FPS titles to have good replay value long into the future. I still play the early Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games, and of course the classics, Doom, Wolf3D, Turok, Duke Nukem 3D, and Serious Sam. An FPS game has to be really poorly done for me not to keep on playing it over and over.
