NV15 is really just a tweaked and bug fixed NV10 so who knows what's up.
Interesting, I've never noticed such problems. The truth is I never really used GF 256 to play games (it is simply too slow for me)... just benchmarks. But Even in the Fraps frametimes logs, there is nothing pointing to stuttering. Maybe it is related to GPU driver / chipset driver / chipset itself? The word is NV10 had some AGP compatibility issue, so maybe this. Here are some results:
Pentium E5700 @ 3.9 GHz
ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2
2 GB DDR2 600 MHz CL4-4-4-12
Windows XP SP3
FW 71.89 WHQL
GeForce 256 DDR - 32 MB (128-bit), 120/300 MHz
GeForce2 GTS - 32 MB (128-bit), 200/333 MHz
GeForce4 MX 440 SE - 64 MB (64-bit), 275/266 MHz
Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, 1024x768, noAA/noAF

Max Payne 2, 1024x768, noAA/noAF

Serious Sam SE, 1024x768, noAA/noAF

GTA Vice City, 1024x768, noAA/noAF

There might be some issues in Serious Sam... so perhaps OpenGL related? Everything else looks good (but is running D3D). Of course the question is if these frametimes logs can be trusted and represents the actual "smoothness"... but I guess noone will measure it using FCAT. 🤣
