Looks great man! I like the case as well it has that nice retro flair too it. Looks like it has decent cable management too considering that wasn't a real concern back then. Congrats again on getting your build together it looks really nice.

Nice! That board has a pretty good chipset for the 486 era, I think a DX4 fits like a glove! More importantly, no barrel or Dallas RTC junk! I have that same board and I'm planning a build around it in the following weeks/months if I can find enough free time.

I see you have a CPU fan there, was the DX4 overdrive running too hot? Because I believe those came with heatsink only, no fan.

Also, I really like the case, did the cool 486 badge come with it or you got it separately?

Those Enlight cases are really sharp, and have a nice build quality to them. The removable motherboard tray and tool-less bezel are a nice added touch too.

My P233 build has the same case with a Myoda badge (local computer dealer which is somehow still in operation with an appropriately gaudy website.) I wish I could find another, it's a tiny little beast and very easy to work with.

The case badge I got from eBay. I put the fan on the overdrive just because I could really. There is also a case fan at the front. Not really necessary but maybe it will help this old hardware last longer. I am a sucker for cable management, it is an obsession of mine!

You also say your running on board ESS 688, but the pic shows a Sound card, or is that the ESS?

Nice system either way. I'm no purest and also like having the mix of new (gotek/SD's) with old 486's

The spec of the new one is as follows:

16MB 72-pin SIMM RAM (2x8MB)
1MB Diamond Speedstar Pro VLB video card
AOpen VI15G Socket 3 Motherboard
HDD/FDD VLB controller card
486 DX4-100 (Overdrive)
Soundblaster 16 Value CT2770
HDD is some random IDE drive made within the last 10 years (can't remember)

Well it's been over 6 months since I put this together. I have not had a good chance to enjoy it much yet due to moving and being busy with work. As I have a serial to PS/2 adapter coming soon I thought I would try and figure out the issue with the Soundblaster 16 CT2770 I am having. The volume is really low in all games. The volume is OK in the diagnose utility. When I run the SB16SET.EXE command it comes back with "MIX0014: Low level driver error". Anybody know what that means?

I will try this when I get home. I see you REM'd a couple of lines in there. I know I have the one with DIAGNOSE in it, not sure about the SBFMDRV one. But as they are removed that should be OK anyway. If it doesn't work I will post my startup files.

I tried following your instructions and got the same error while the startup files were being processed. It doesn't help that I have not worked on this for about 6 months. See my AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS below, maybe you can figure out what I am doing wrong:

I will give it a try. I do have another sound card, a Sound Blaster AWE32 CT3780 ISA. If I keep having problems with this SB16 I will switch to that.
