Newly made Gravis Ultrasound compatible cards ... what's the degree of interest?

Discussion about old sound cards, MIDI devices and sound related accessories.

"Good" news everyone. I can reproduce the RAM check fail on all revisions of the prototype _as well as_ on the original GUS PnP.
Gonna try to reproduce that on another system later today and if that happens try to investigate what's going on there.

Did you plan to share the steps to reproduce the behaviour once it is confirmed? Is the official InterWave memory test reporting the problem?

Yup, it's the RAM test in setup.exe of the GUS PnP reporting RAM errors. If I can confirm it's a bug with the hardware/software I'll share how to reproduce them ... currently signs are towards wrong settings of my mainboard.

You'll all get PNs with your tracking numbers shortly after this post.
EDIT: You all should have messages with your tracking numbers in your inboxes now.

Maybe not related, but I've noticed that the InterWave doesn't like having a high I/O recovery time on the ISA bus. In my case, it produced distorted MIDI playback (screeches and beeps) eventually, but I never bothered with the memory test. Reducing the recovery time fixed that problem, so the InterWave is somewhat sensitive to these settings.

My Prototype has arrived too. No. 11
I have to order parts this weekend.
I hope my solder skills are good enough to get it done.
I am sort of a novice in this aspect.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but hell yes if it was a 1:1 clone that worked on old machine I'd be all over that. Also though someone mentioned Amiga? Could the Amiga soundset be made into a PC compatible soundcard? That would be freaking amazing. lol

No (it started out as a simple clone, but has long progressed) and hell no.
Fuck Amiga.

Lol Such hate, I must agree. I love the C64 and 128 but I don't care much for the Amiga although I have a pristine one in boxes.

Have not received my prototype yet, but I have allready ordered parts from Phreeze basket on Digi-Key - once again thanks.
Funny is that ordering parts for three is cheaper than order for two cards because with three there are no shipping costs.

So the only parts I may need (to done all the proper way) are DRAM (that can but not have to be used in slot) and that metal "bracket" - don't know how to call it?

I've never personally experienced an Ultrasound, but I check this thread all the time. It completely blows my mind that someone has designed and is now producing (on some level) a modern remake of a vintage sound card.

I'm definitely interested in getting a later revision of one of these. I just lack the skills and knowledge needed to make use of a development board... :)

I don't know if I understood properly so please help.

How many DRAM modules I need (yes I know they are optional). I'm saying of these:
https://pl.mouser.com/productdetail/issi/is41c16105c-50kli?qs=sGAEpiMZZMti5BT4iPSEnXmjY%252buK6gYSEjdeFNR3lUU%3D
EDIT: I found these modules for 4,38USD each (IS41C16105C-50KLI)

I don't need any sockets as all DRAM etc may be soldered directly? Yes?

Bill of materials - as well as the footprint- should be obvious enough.
You can solder up to 2 DRAM chips directly onto the board, a single one or none would also work. Keep in mind sockets are only supported for 40 pin chips, 42 pin ones need to be soldered directly onto the board.

If anyone succeeds in socketing those, give me a ring. I attempted that a few days ago, gave up and resorted to soldering those directly on board.

Isn't the better option to leave the onboard ram unpopulated and use the simm socket?

Anything goes (that's what the added pullups R1-R9 are for) - just make sure to select the desired configuration via JP0-JP3 & JP6 & JP7
