Hi,

my sons still love playing the old DOOM 1.666. Now they have got one new and fast PC with WinXPHome and so the problem occurs playing DOOM 1.666 with WinXPHome. This did not work until using DOSBox.
But there is still the problem of using the multiplayer-modus: With Win98/Win95 there was no problem: Adding the IPX-protocoll to the LAN and it worked. But although NWLink/IPX is added to the WinXPHome-LAN and enabling IPX in DOSBox and connecting the DOSBox to the WinXP-environment with
IPXNET CONNECT <IP-no.>
the WinXPHome-PC does not get contact to the other PC running DOOM 1.666.
Can anybody explain what to do?

Beste Grüße

Unfortunately I have no experience using networking with DOSBox, but I do have a couple of suggestions you might try until someone else replies:
- I think the newest version of DOOM is 1.9 rather than 1.666, so you might want to get a patch
- The source for DOOM has been ported to Windows, resulting in the excellent ports jDoom, zDoom, and others (doomworld is a good site to start looking). These should be easier to get working and will have better graphics and sound than the original (if you want to take advantage of it - it's optional in some ports)

you cannot connect DosBox IPX to any other IPX. It's only DosBox to DosBox IPX which is transferred over UDP.

So you start the IPX server in one DosBox and connect with the other DosBox. IPX settings on the host do not matter to DosBox.

Thanks. My sons love DOOM as they know it. But of course a better grafic would be welcome - if the software does not need special hardware because the old Win98-PC only use simple VGA-grafic-card, no 3D-accelerator etc. Without testing all the ports I can not judge what port is running in WinXPHome and does not need more than a normal vga-grafic-card. Can you give me a hint?

ZDoom is probably the best port to try, as it doesn't require a 3D accelerator unless you get the GL version. ZDoom's home page is here: http://www.zdoom.org/

Patches for Doom to upgrade from 1.666 to 1.9 are available here: http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dp.cgi?lang=eng&ref=&sys=&cap=d
(look near the top under "DOOM!")

Thanks. I will test it.
Meanwhile I have tested DOOM95. It runs on the WinXPHome-PC and a medium-old Win98-PC. But an old Win95-Laptop is to slow for this; so the DOS-version still must be used. DOOM95 offers the possibility to make multiplayer-mode not only with Win-TCP/IP-directplay and Win-IPX-directplay but also DOS-IPX. This is, I assume, the "original" DOS-DOOM-IPX-mulitplay-mode. I have tried to connect the WinXPHome-PC with DOOM95 in this mode with the Win95-Laptop with DOS-DOOM 1.666. But it does not work: DOOM95 is asking for a IPX-port - but I don´t know what to answer and when using the default "0" the software hangs up. Any chance to get it? What port-no. I must insert?

Doomsday is also good. I beat Hexen with it.

Yes, I actually prefer Doomsday (jDoom) myself, but ZDoom is more backwards-compatible with the original Doom software renderer.

It's best not to use different software to connect to other software.

In your post mentioned above your using:

XP with IPX loaded
Doom 95 with some sort of IPX option.

DOS computer
IPX Drivers.
Doom IPX support.

There are waaaaaaaaayy too many variables in there.

So:

1. Doom Doom95 to Doom95
2. DosBox to DosBox IPX.
3. or grab Hal's DosBox with the updated IPX and do a XP\DosBox (IPX)\Doom to DOS (IPX)\Doom.

The best would be DOOMsday at WinXPHome-PC, DOOM95 with the Win98-PCs and DOS-DOOM 1.0 with he old Laptop which is to slow for DOOM95.

But also when I use DOOM95 with WinXPHome-PC the problem ist left how to connect the PCs with DOOM via DOS-IPX (to include the old Laptop with DOS-DOOM 1.9). DOOM95 is made for this - but how to do? The HELP-File does not give help for this ...
