Howdy all. Finally got my Video card today in the mail from eBay. Ive been waiting for it for what seems like forever, to test this 486 board I got out.

Well, when I boot the system, The monitor seems to detect signal, but all I can see is some faint waves lines. (it almost looks like a sync type of issue, but I dunno)
I have another board that has ISA, but no memory for that one so can't try this card in that system.

The system powers on, PSU runs, I can reset with the switch, just.. thats it.

Trying to figure out some ways to test to see if its this motherboard, or the video card. Any ideas and tips would be great.
Using an ALI 486 board. As far as I can tell, jumpers seem to be set correct.

No beeps or boops. CPU gets warm so I know its gettin some sorta power.
Card is this one. http://www.vgamuseum.info/images/palcal/oak/2 … 037c_top_hq.jpg

Do all mobo's beep when something is wrong? Ie, no memory. I didn't know if that was a new feature.

EDIT: Just noticed this mobo doesn't have the built in buzzer speaker. just a 4 pin header for a speaker. Not sure what I can connect to it. Maybe I can wire a spare buzzer to it somehow.

i have experienced cases that the motherboard would not beep.
in any case if the motherboard is functional it should beep when no video adapter is found.

Alright. Got plenty of spare junk boards, gonna desolder the buzzer and wire one up. Will report back if it boops and or beeps 😀

This Oak card is the second-worst one I ever saw in this forum.
I'd check it on another system to make sure it works.
Back then the DACs failed quite often. Then screen stays black. But they are easy to replace.
But in your place I would get a good video card instead, Oak cards are not fun.

Btw, you can connect a normal 8 ohms speaker to the speaker post.

Ive heard they arnt the greatest cards but I paid next to nothing for it. Seller said it was tested.. but.. they always say that.

So I hooked up the buzzer and we got beeps. This was with just the mobo and nothing else. gonna add ram and video and see what happens.

Ok. So. Added the memory. Turns on .. Seems to cycle through...then 2 short beeps. Now, I did disconnect and remove the battery and put in a new one. So I'm thinking those 2 beeps could be posting about that.

However.. When I added the Video card... no beeps...
Now this one has the 8 ram chips on it, I'm assuming if one had gone bad, the entire board won't work. Can I remove them, and them back 1 by 1. Will I get anything viewable with one of the chips missing?

No beeps is good.
With defective video rams you will get picture, however distorted. Defective video ram normally doesn't cause beeps.

Aside of the DAC, on your card there is high risk of the crystals being broken, as Oak was even too greedy to reserve them place to be mounted horizontally.

well like I said, the monitor lights up and you can see faint lines...almsot like something out of sync... like a flickering
should I just return the card at this point? Id like to try to fix it, as I like fixing stuff.

Uploading a Video of the display currently.

If you had another vga with socketed DAC I would test with another DAC.
What you describe is typical for a dead DAC.

And yes, if you can get your money back, I'd take the opportunity and get a Tseng or a S3 card. These are the only painless ISA graphics cards (i.e. no hassles with non-working drivers, compatible with all games etc).

Retardware: So it won't work if I undocked some of the Chips to see if it starts to work.. Ie, run it with less memory?

Edit: Tried it.. Didn't work with different configurations. Same every time. Even with all the DAC removed.

This is low quality video card with generic chipset, not working properly. Did you try move the jumper (power down first of course!), on the video card also did you make sure the jumper on your motherboard is set to color or mono?

Try to find a WD or cirrus logic video card instead.

I've got this card. It's a bit limited, but on the bright side can emulate older standards (CGA w/ alternate palettes etc) to some degree and isn't as finicky as some Trident 9000s I tested.
With a wrong jumper setting, however, you won't get any picture. Please check the red jumper block on the side.

Edit: Here's the configuration that works for me (on an LCD monitor)..

Edit: Just noticed the link in your second post.. Unfortunately, this is another model, sorry. 🙁
Did you find out what JP1 is for ? If you're stuck in the process, try to get one of these ISA POST cards.
They may look like an unnecessarity at first, but really can help you to save your nerves in the long run.
Some are ISA/PCI hybrids even and useful on newer PCs, too.
