It came without a sound card. Two card slot brackets were missing and a Matrox driver was installed, so someone has taken something out of it. It does have a 3COM NIC.

That's certainly a plus, but it does need a reinstall or at least a thorough register cleaning, because some software has not been properly deinstalled. What I really like is that it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive and instead still the original slot cover 😀 #geek

I brought some optical drives to their last destination and took this HP Brio (you never see this model in the classified ads in my country for sale) from the e-waste container home today:

I've inspected it and cleaned it quickly this afternoon.

It has a Pentium MMX (probably 166 or 200), proprietary form factor i430VX board, 32 MB RAM, 2.1GB HDD and an onboard S3 Trio 'something'. A very typical 1997 pc (according to some date stamps inside).

To my surprise it works:

I'm going to keep this one, always nice to have a socket 7 system with a good motherboard.

Wow have not seen a beige HP mid tower in probably 10 years, nice find !

Friend's dumpster find - I received this stuff in exhange for 486 build I'm completing for him.
Some damage unfortunatelly... but not on the items I really cared for (SCSI controllers, CGA card, 286 board) some of it I may fix...

Nice ! It looks like a 10Mhz 286 but the main Xtal looks like 48Mhz, so is it being overclocked to 12Mhz ? Just an observation and hope it works.

Seeing that Compaq Alpha DS10 hurts me. Alpha stuff is impossible to find in Pennsylvania.

There's more than 1 in there, there are 3 more. I already saved 2.. don't have room for more at my house 🤣. DS20E's are next.

Nice ! There is a place in my area where you can dump off old computers and they recycle the parts, have seen big bins full of old computers there BUT they guard it well and no non-employee can get near them or take anything. Wish I knew someone who worked there but am sure they have strict employee rules too.

For now tantalum cap blowed into my face, and burned a hole in the carpet... It seems I will never learn to check them for shorts prior to applying voltage...

I have a 386 mobo that powered up fine about 10 times and then both 12V and -12V caps failed - the 12V blew up and after that identified as a light bulb (a smoky and smelly one), while the -12V just kept silently tripping the PSU protection. So checking first is good but not exactly guaranteed to weed out the bad ones.

Need a bigger -12V supply then 😀

I did have a tant blow up on me in a 286 though. I've cleaned up the board but haven't put in a replacement cap. However, motherboard seems to work fine.

From electronics scrap at work - must qualify as a dumpster find 😀

2 SBCs SiS630 Chipset, Tualatin-S 1133.
