Started building out a multi-purpose home server using a Dell PowerEdge T610 a coworker bestowed upon me. Just installed Plex Media Server and started putting some movies on it currently. Planning on adding some file storage for software as well, and maybe play with PXE once I get my hands on an EEPROM burner. It runs CentOS. Took me four tries, with the hardest hit when it decided to use the 2TB RAID as the /home directory - eek.
Had a chorus of laptops ripping DVD's to put on it my whole 4-day weekend, including the Lenovo T61 I'm typing on now, also used the Server for it but CentOS has some problems recognizing other DVD's after ripping the first one. However my 2 Linux Mint beasties (T61, Dell Vostro) did a great job even if one DVD took half a day using VLC, while the Inspiron 15 running Win10 did music duty.
Learned a heaping ton doing this though - picked up some SSH-ing into headless server skills, setting up firewall and security properly using Linux based O/S using all Linux.....starting to toy with getting more serious into Linux and getting some Certs there, or at least some kind of professional-level form of experience/ability recognition. So definatley enhancing my skillset further.
