Backing up my old S7 Edge (going to retire it) and going to put the data that's backed up on my SD card onto the new phone I recently got (put on a screen protector and added the case to it as a precautionary measure). 1 thing left after that and that is activating it.

Started building out a multi-purpose home server using a Dell PowerEdge T610 a coworker bestowed upon me. Just installed Plex Media Server and started putting some movies on it currently. Planning on adding some file storage for software as well, and maybe play with PXE once I get my hands on an EEPROM burner. It runs CentOS. Took me four tries, with the hardest hit when it decided to use the 2TB RAID as the /home directory - eek.

Had a chorus of laptops ripping DVD's to put on it my whole 4-day weekend, including the Lenovo T61 I'm typing on now, also used the Server for it but CentOS has some problems recognizing other DVD's after ripping the first one. However my 2 Linux Mint beasties (T61, Dell Vostro) did a great job even if one DVD took half a day using VLC, while the Inspiron 15 running Win10 did music duty.

Learned a heaping ton doing this though - picked up some SSH-ing into headless server skills, setting up firewall and security properly using Linux based O/S using all Linux.....starting to toy with getting more serious into Linux and getting some Certs there, or at least some kind of professional-level form of experience/ability recognition. So definatley enhancing my skillset further.

Took a bit of a risk yesterday and updated all of my regular-use machines to the 2004 build of Win10 that was just released. No issues at all, and that was on 6 different configs ranging from a Core 2 E8600 to a Ryzen 9 3900X!

Went to try out newest Windows 10 build. Got disappointed. Returned to my Windows 9x VM...

I gotta say, I have a memory-starved and disk-starved 2012 laptop and Windows 10 build 2004 has shown a massive memory management improvement. Chrome 84 with 100 (hibernating) tabs went from stuttering along to actually usable overnight! I expect that might be related to Microsoft Edge's segmented memory support addition (assuming that had to be sent upstream to Chromium) but my old Firefox install saw improvements as well. I am often an early adopter and prepared to handle teething problems, but in this case, I was pleasantly surprised. I've often seen Chrome sucking away up to 3GB or 4GB but after installing build 2004 it seems to idle at no more than 2 GB RAM, and dwindles down to 600MB RAM if left running overnight! 😳

I was actually talking in terms of design and UI/UX experience, lack of newer features in this department. But yes, performance wise there is some improvement. I removed a lot of default apps, including the infuriating Internet Explorer 11, installed Edge Chromium, I managed to remove Xbox, Cortana, killed a lot of telemetry and data collection features for privacy. I also shrunk the system size, almost 8GB.

But yeah, the system is feeling a bit faster now. Now they just need to copy Avdan's Windows 20 Concept design (you can find it on youtube) to be perfect.

Had a Geforce 310 (weird OEM 210) with one of those tiny paper thin heatsinks and pathetic dying fan. So dug through the box of spare parts and swapped the passive heatsink from a Geforce 4 mx 460 onto it. At 31 watts tdp hopefully it's enough cooling for this craptastic card.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

How about they finally finish porting functionality into the new UI control panel? How about they restore functionality in the start menu so frequently used programs are automatically more visible?

I have no idea. They haven't finished, that's for sure. As for the Start Menu, I disabled everything - from tiles to most recent apps, suggested... I wanted the full list only as is. I could install Classic Shell/Open Shell, but it would only give me something closer to the classic start menu + XP icons. No thanks but no thanks....

Neat, now the card wont output video. I wonder if it needs something connected to the onboard fan header. Time to dig the old fan out of the trash and check!

Why bother trying to save this bottom of the barrel Geforce ? For a media player PC ?

Well the HD 6450 in my parent's Dell XPS died, (so did their PSU) so I slapped a gtx 750 ti and Antec 380 watt psu in there for them. Got this Geforce in 1st gen i5 XPS I picked up and wanted to swap the 750 ti out for this card since the 750ti is a great pair for the i5 760 in the old XPS I picked up. Ended up putting a Quadro FX 580 in their pc as a place holder, but for 1080p Youtube and the like the 310 with it's 1gb of vram would still end up being a better card for their light usage.

I understand. If you have it and you have use for it, it makes sense to repair it rather then spend 35$ for even a GT710 that would bring little more to your use case .

I guess I just feel a little bad for the Mx460's sacrifice . 😀

Hey TBH Im keeping the MX card and going to ghetto rig a HSF onto it from some craptastic or dead card I find. I may never use it, or may end up passing it along to someone else, but a GOOD card doesnt get tossed. It is an Asus Geforce mx 440 (not 460, sorry typo) so for someone with a P3 rig or P4 looking for a solid 9x card it isnt useless.

I was thinking here... which newer versions of apache, php and mysql can Windows 2000 run nowadays? Or is it actually capable of hosting a such small web server for local network purposes?

Stripped down the two PC's I got earlier this week. The i5 2500k, EVGA P67 and 750ti will upgrade my sister's Phenom ii x2 ddr2 machine that is using an hd 6870 2gb card that has been lacking instruction sets and good drivers that have prevented her from playing some newer games for awhile now. Should make for a pretty competent machine when all is said and done!
