I've been trying to get my GUS to work in DOS. I've tried three different versions of the installation/setup program, they all hang at either at start of setup or when checking IRQ's. HWMonitor also hangs when it starts to "Checking GUS at h220". I've tried to change the address to 240, and same thing. HWMonitor just says "Checking GUS at h240"

Then I tried to initialise the card without the setup with:

SET ULTRASND=220,5,5,5,5’ (220 was the address at the moment), then running ULTRINIT.exe. The screen went black with just a error message: "Undetermined NMISystem Halted!"

So I'm a bit lost what to do. Help?

I also have GUS 3.74. What are the specs of your PC? Motherboard, cpu etc. Any other isa or pci cards installed in the system?
What GUS software version are you trying to install?
Look into bios and try to reserve the resources you intend to use with gus to legacy isa equipment, disable serial and parallel ports.
I have managed to make a GUS classic, AWE32, Vortex2 (PCI), 3com lan adapter (PCI) and voodoo3 (AGP) to work in dos with no issues.
It may take a bit of fiddling with bios, switching pci slots to avoid as many resource sharing issues as possible.
My mobo is Asus P3B-F 1.04 2 isa slot version with latest beta bios (1008 iirc).

Cheers

Thank you for the answer. So it's more likely a problem with my pc and GUS working together than a problem with the GUS itself? My motherboard is a very generic Intel Zappa with a P75. One of the cheaper clones from mid 90's.

I've been trying to install the drivers for GUS, versions 1.2, 2.X and 4.41. All hang at either start of setup program or at IRQ check.

installation/setup program

It often hangs with a correct configuration, so don't use it to test. Check on what IRQ your parallel port sits and avoid that one (often 5 or 7). You're also using 16-bit DMA in your config, try getting it to work with an 8-bit DMA first (like DMA channel 3).

Coincidentally, I was reading a very similar thread this afternoon:

Gravis Ultrasound Classic problems

Well, damn. Thanks for the link. Seems like the card is most likely dead then.

Does it initialize with ultrinit.exe at all under different irq and/or dma?
Also there is a download for ultrinit 2.31 on vogons driver page which may help. Especially that newer gus' have hardware mixer onboard.
