I really don't understand spammers . If the aim is to advertise a product/service that is available globally, I can understand the spamvertisement being posted or mail-spammed anywhere . However, if the product spamvertized is only available in a given locality (escort service, repair shop or whatever else), what's the point of posting spam on random global forums ?

I get that spamming is cheap, but it still takes the spammers time to do it manually or configure spambots, so why don't they at least try to minimally target their audience ? Not doing it seems incredibly dumb .

In the context of legitimate advertising, it would be like a small refrigerator repair shop in a given city trying to target customers all over the planet instead of focusing on the local area where there might actually be potential customers.

Is there something I am not getting or do at least some spammers have no business sense (or even possibly working brain cells) at all ?

That's assuming the goal is for a legitimate purpose. Most likely it's for non-legit reasons. Public hangings for those who create and use such things as well as those who pay ransomware would nip that in the bud pretty quick

Even if the purpose is to, for example, to attract clicks with the goal of getting marks infected with malware of some kind, I can't imagine that advertising a local whorehouse is the most effective way to gain enough attention to get as many of those clicks as possible on a global scale .

Anyway, I guess I am overthinking it. There is most certainly some overlap between spammers/scammers/ransomers and the group commonly referred to as complete idiots . The smart ones succeed an don't get caught (at least not quickly) and the dumb ones fail and get caught (usually quickly).

Though I am personally not a supporter of the death penalty, I do agree with the need for effective deterrents, punishments and, if possible, re-habilitation (not an easy one in the best of cases) . That said, ransomers, in particular, make my blood boil when they target places like hospitals . The callous lack of concern for the impact of their actions is despicable and, IMHO, makes perpetrators unlikely candidates for any hope of re-habilitation .

Exactly, well put about overlap darry. Hey maybe they've themselves fallen victim to some old spamming software ad campaign 😁
A perhaps interesting tidbit, did you know Bitcoin has its origins in trying to solve the spam problem? See "hashcash"
The idea was that each mail would require the sender to do a small hash computation, so that it would be neglectible for normal users but expensive for spammers.
But I guess that didn't work out exactly as planned 🤣
