Some games require very low cycles for sound autodetection. They may also sound to be configured for game too.

Intel i7 5960X
Gigabye GA-X99-Gaming 5
8 GB DDR4 (2100)
8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)

KQ4 and KQ6 do not get the audio hardware initialization error, but KQ5 does. I would say that he needs to run INSTALL to setup his audio hardware. The CD versions of KQ5 and 6 also need to have the CD drive mounted, too.

Yeah - run INSTALL.EXE and choose "Soundblaster". If the game harps at you saying "Cannot detect your audio hardware" then you need to reduce your cycles. I find at 9000 or lower the games don't have any issues.

For CD versions though I don't find cycles affect the process, but as collector mentioned make sure you've mounted your CD-ROM drive and set the "-t cdrom" for it to work.

KQ4 has no speech, just music (set Adlib). KQ5 has no digital effects in the disk version (Adlib) but the CD version does. KQ6 has digital effects in both (Sound Blaster) and speech in the CD version.

I'm having a similar problem with KQV. Despite following the instructions given, I'm still not getting any sound. When I try to open it with VDMsound, I get this message:

'dosdrv.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

VDMS loaded properly, but encountered an error while initializing.

Don't hesitate to seek support on the VDMS site, http://ntvdm.cjb.net/.
