Today I want to show you my most recent build named "All things dual".
The story behind it is roughly this:

  • Received a Voodoo 5 5500 in a scrap lot in January this year that I was able to fix (some parts had been knocked off)
  • Found a cheap Tyan Tiger 100 motherboard including two P3-600 CPUs in a local classifieds ad
  • Found this thread about a fantastic build using exactly the parts that I now owned: Dual Slot-1 PIII / Voodoo 5 5500 build
  • Went shopping for a case and some accessories (fans, cables, second HDD etc.) and put together the "All things dual" machine
  • Side quest: Use components with green PCB only

Usually I like my retro builds to be more or less period correct, but this time I decided to use some modern parts, too.
I don't think that this system will see regular use, but building it was fun and I finally fell like I have found an adequate way of accommodating the Voodoo 5.
The build could still use some beefier CPUs (the board officially supports up to 850 MHz) but these are rather difficult and expensive to obtain, so I'll probably leave it like this for now.

So here are the specs as of today:

  • Motherboard: Tyan Tiger 100 (S1832DL), dual Slot 1, 440BX chipset
  • CPUs: Dual Pentium III 600 MHz
  • RAM: 1024 MB SD-RAM (only 512 MB shown in the photos), looking to upgrade it to registered ECC RAM
  • Graphics: 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
  • Sound 1: Yamaha Waveforce XG192 (PCI)
  • Sound 2: Creative AWE64 Value (ISA)
  • Network: Compaq Dual Port Fast Ethernet Card
  • Storage Controller: 3ware Escalade 7000-2 dual-port IDE RAID controller
  • Hard Disks: 2x 40 GB Samsung Spinpoint 40GB ATA133
  • Optical Drive: NEC DVD
  • Floppy Disk Drive: yes, it does have one
  • Power Supply: BeQuiet! 430W
  • Case: Sharkoon M25-W
  • Operating System: Windows 98 SE / Windows 2000 dual-boot

@Tali: Yeah, the first thing that caught my eye when I installed the mainboard was how good the coolers look together with the black case!
@Intel486dx33: If the tower had more drive bays, I would have gone with dual optical & floppy drives, too 😉

Well, you could still do that with Dell NR95F caddies and slim CD/DVD drives. Example here.

Damn sexy, only problem I have is this been the 2nd all things dual with a V5 my P2B-DS V2 SLI build is getting outclassed 🙁

Love the modern case and how your retro hardware blends in perfectly with it! Well done. And then I realise you've doubled up on everything, you are clinically insane but we all approve!

Good evening to all,

I am a "lucky" owner of a TYAN TIGER 100 MOTHERBOARD S1832D from few days as I'm trying to build a retro pc.
Thing is that when I received it I noticed there are 4 components missing on the board.

Specifically the missing components are the 4 yellow inductances in the top of the board (attached the picture of the 4 missing inductances )

My question is... do someone of the people within this topic who still owns this motherboard, with a kind of electronic system knowledge... mind to measure the impedence value of one of those inductances so I can try to find some replacements around in the electronical market?

What I need is the value in mH or uH of the inductance.

I thank you in advance for your support...!
