Quick update.

It might be possible to run more emulators on Win32s by the help of Tos2Win.
In essence, the Atari ST was the spritiual predecessor of a Win 3.x PC, after all.:

TOS consisted of CP/M 68k core and GEM environment, which share some similarities with DOS+Windows.
CP/M 68k, being CP/M, used a similar design like DOS, while GEM had similar APIs (VDI vs GDI).

This makes me wonder if it is possible to run, say, an ancient Mac 68k emulator on Tos2Win.
Since both use the Motorola 68000 CPU, there should be no "emulation inside emulation" speed penalty.

Last, but not least, I came across another emulator list.
It's kind of chart/table like, but has direct download links of old emulators (file names/full path):

I found it by accident when I looked for vMac v0.17 and vMac v0.18a for Windows originally.
What's funny/interesting, some of these old links work with in the wayback machine.

However, and now it gets interesting: Searching for the direct links gives a 1997 result sometimes! 😀
If you're asking wayback for a complete listing of the url, though, it won't display any results before 1998..

Quick update.

Not really an emulator by definition, but WinCLI is a nice command prompt simulator.
It can run on systems such as Wabi, for example, which do not support DOS programs out of box.

But yes, it's a bit of a far stretch really.
The expression of that anime character says it all.. 😉

Hello everyone, long time no see! ^^

Just want to let you know I'm still collecting old emulators..

Here's another little tool that's not really releated to emulation in the common sense, but still useful.

It's "Emulador de Teclado", which in Spanish language means "keyboard emulator".
So you guessed it, it's a virtual keyboard for Windows 3.x. 😀
The program is Freeware and comes with source code.

I've found a neat little description how the "Executor" emulator does (or rather : did) its magic! 😀
You can read it here.

PS: Executor was a quick, emulated environment of System.
It could run Macintosh applications on Windows, for example, without needing an actual copy of System or Toolbox.

I've found another emulator tool that's compatible with Windows 3.1x: MaxiDisk v4.2, a floppy tool.

Thanks to this, I stumbled upon this little utility.

Now, MaxiDisk seems to very interesting. It also has a TSR driver that adds support for special formats.
What's also interesting - The copyright dates back to 1988.
Also, some GUI elements are (pre-) Win3. 0-ish.. Could it be, that older releases originated from the Windows 2.x days? Hm? 🙂

Me, neither! There's more than I hoped for! 😄
I guess we did already beat that wonderful emulation guide mentioned on page #1!

- But to be honest, discovering them was the work of hundreds of hours.. 😵

Many sites were dead and so I had to social engineer quite a lot.

Like, figuring out an authors older website that had a different URL.

Or experimenting with file names a lot. If say, "foo22.lzh" didn't exist, I tried combinations of different extensions and numbers ("f0022.zip") and so on.

Sometimes, this did lead me to other emulation sites that had dead links, too,
but had an archived twin at Wayback.

And these archived sites had links to other gone by emulation sites, which I followed - down to the mid-90s.

And if these sites had dead links to files, too, I did at least found out the file names of the initial versions, which sometimes were saved on servers accross the web.

That's why things took so long.
Also, I did test each of the emulators on Win32s before. 😀

I'll do my best to find some more - already found a few sophisticated terminal emulators for Win 3.1! 😉

By the way, in the process, I came across quite a few emulators for OS/2 Warp.. Is there any interest, by chance, too ? 😀

Hopefully someone from https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/ is paying attention, not all of this they'd consider emulation but it probably has the most potential out of any website to capture the early days of emulation.

Sure, not all programs mentioned are emulators in the usual sense,
like the keyboard, command line and terminal emulators. They are rather gimmicks or extras. 😉

Wow, so many emulators for Win3.1x - I'm kind of amazed I missed all this during my early days (2001-2005) of messing with 486s.

Me too. I have never knew they existed until recently, when this thread started.

So far, I'm continuing my voyage, but offline, too. So it may take some time.
I'm tracking down old CD-ROMs now, both in digital and physical form. 😁

Currently, I've found some more emulators already which I add soon.
For example, the 32-Bit versions (Win32s) of the first pair on the list (Altair / IMSAI) that I found recently.

Maybe they are handy for users of ReactOS or Wine.
Or Windows 10 ARM, which I heard can execute Win32 and Win64 programs out-of-box, but not Win16.

PS: I'll also collect/save OS/2 ports of emulators from now on..
Because, OS/2 was like a second home of the Windows 3.1x platform (Win-OS/2).
However, they are likely mentioned in another thread/topic. Maybe I will use an external file hoster, too, not sure at the moment.
