i want run a dual CPU setup on my Asus P2B-D and for that i use 2x Abit slotket S370 Adapter and 2 P3 1GHz (FSB100) CPUs.
First at all when i run single CPU anything is fine and working.
When i slot the second CPU the system detected both but booting into XP are very slow (slower as 1CPU only). I also notice that both CPU cooler getting really hot, like load at 100%.
So i wonder whats going wrong?
Anyone running a dual CPU setup on the P2B-D/DS with S370 adapter?

Make sure that XP is recognizing both processors. Only XP Professional supported more than 1 processor.

No issues here (pair of Coppermines, 1000/256/100/1.75V SL5QV on two MSI MS-6905 Master slockets)...

...though will admit I've sometimes found dual ABit SlotKET III setups more temperamental at times.

i remember NT4 you can choose on setup if your system is single or multi cpu. My XP pro install only show 1 cpu. Maybe it need a reinstall with both. Make not really a sense for me, but i will test.
Booting win98se seems also normal working without issues. I know no multi cpu support, but looks like my xp dont like the setup.

edit: ok i installed win2k pro and anything works fine now.. Pretty sure with fresh winxp install it will runs also, but after all win2k runs amazing with 2 physical cpus!

Windows 95 (no multi-processor support) exhibited the same, slow behavior with 2 processors installed. For future reference, 3 files need to be changed/added (or the boot-loader reconfigured) - when migrating XP from a single cpu to dual cpus. It can be done manually or by a re-install.

ACPI Multiprocessor PC
- halmacpi.dll
- ntkrpamp.exe
- ntkrnlmp.exe

i can confirm my problem is that ACPI.
switched for now to windows 2000 pro. And installed it as ACPI. System crashes on boot..
If i activate in my bios MPS1.4 support, the system boot fine for one time. After a cold boot it crashes again.

I also tryed to deactivate ACPI on the device manager. So i switched first to Standard PC. This solved my Problems.
But im not sure system use my two cores now?
CPU-z show 1core . In the device manager under computer are shown two "Standard PC" now .
I was thinking win2k can handle MPS1.4..

If I were you, I'd install XP Pro again. XP should be able to recognize both cpus .

Motherboards earlier then rev 1.12 have a buggy ACPI once a second CPU is installed.
Work around is during setup F5 and select “MPS Multiprocessor PC. Catch is it won't turn itself off anymore.

You can fix it by swapping out a resistor, below is in German but google will do a good enough job of translating

the P2B-D latest rev is 1.06 (mine is 1.06)far as i know. Thanks for the link. I tryed install with F5 and set to MPS before .
I think my board has another problem with the slots. I will got a DS with two 750er installed and working in the next days where i can crosstest.

Ok got another P2B- this time a DS rev 1.06 with two 750 CPUs i seen working on win7 install.

So again new clean install of windows 2k pro SP4.
In my bios i change MPS support 1.4 on. Boot from cd , F5 than choosing MPS Multi Core and installed. After setup system see only one cpu. I dont get it..

Is there a driver for the slotket 3 i need to load on setup. It looks like setup dont see two cpus in my system. But than why one is working? And btw on boot bios detected 2 cpus.

There's no base driver for the SlotKET III (or any other slot 1 adapter)...they're designed to be transparent to the system board / BIOS.

If you tell me how you've got each one jumpered for FSB & voltage, I'll set my board (P2B-DS 1.06 / D02) up with 2 x SlotKET III for comparison.

Also, take it you've checked both VRM chips on your two motherboards are indeed coppermine ready :

Chips that can provide voltages down to 1.3V:
HIP6019BCB
HIP6020ACB
HIP6004CB
HIP6004BCB
US3007CW

Chips that can only provide voltages down to 1.8V:
HIP6019CB
HIP6004ACB

1.06 is able to take even Tualatin, had a 1,4GHz one working on both. With adapter board..

Jumper settings on the slotket3 1,75V with 100Mhz FSB. Sl5QV

Some slotket adapters dont support dual cpu configuration.
Are tou sure your abit guys are fine with it actually ?
At some point i went through a lot of adapters and the no-dual-cpu ones are very frequent.

Dont waste $ on DS model mobo. These are early variants. Stay on D.

well that is a good point. I was thinking the slotkets III are the best for it..
Because Abit also sold dual boards with this adapter. And mine are both rev 1.1

Best luck I found for dual slotket setup is Asus S370-DL, not easiest to find.

Took me years to find the two I have.

Does the BIOS detect 2 CPUs at POST?

If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎

Please use the "quote" option if asking questions to what I write - it will really up the chances of me noticing 😀

Actually Jackhead's first post shows a screen with 2 CPUs detected, so the slotkets are fine.

ACPI fix here: https://web.archive.org/web/20160819073828/ht … CPI_dual-mb.htm
One resistor. This should unblock you on this issue.

The more interesting part is the overheating problem.
I touched few boards like that. They overheat the CPUs in dual configuration.
Never experienced this in Asus P2B-D, but the boards here are moded with the lower voltage VRMs, so cannot easily test anymore vanilla config.

Can you confirm that the slotkets are configured properly for the Coppermine voltage ?

installed yesterday xp pro new and same problem. Looks like the win setup always install with one CPU. After install OS show only one cpu. Cold restart end in a crash booting OS.
I think here the second cpu kicks in.

Again guys my board is rev 1.06 and dont need that resistor fix. And yes voltage and FSB is set to the correct value 1.75v vcore, bios show 1.8.v vcore.
The Heat problem is gone, the fans i used are to small, switched to the 20mm noctuas and temps are down to 31*C on the heatsinks.

So overall i tested serval Multi core OSs, with ACPI, MPS, Normal PC setting on setup. Nothing helps.

On Hardware side i crosstest anything.
RAMs, CPU, MB, GPU, PSU, Sata controller, IDE HDD..

ATM i think it can only be the S370 adapter in Dual mode. Single CPU they work just fine.
Its really strange..
The only thing i dont test so far is setting the adapter both on Auto settings (FSB/voltage).

Looks like you cleared out all potentials.
So maybe is the cpu adapters after all.
Never tried these Abits, so who knows.
