another fun build i want to try out. Still waiting for the parts.
When it comes to server boards of this Area, what i need to look after because the extra power connectors?
My board comes full boxed with this 2 power boards above the IDE ports. What are they for?
And between the IDE slots and RAM there is another power connector looks like an AT like plug? Kind of pre P4 plug?

As OS i plan NT4 or Win2k, depends on NT4 is working with it..
Still have two U160 18GB HDDs for it.

Here some shot from my parts so far:

Those are the two processor VRM modules...the AT-style connector will be for extra juice on heavily loaded systems

I had a similar computer back in 1990’s
I used the Intel DK440LX motherboard

Specs:
Intel DK440LX
Dual Pentium II @ 333mhz
64mb RAM
Onboard SCSI
Dual Seagate SCSI hard drives
AGP ATI Xpert 98 video card 8mb
3com 3c509 Network card
Sound Blaster 16
Sun Solaris x86

Cost me about $1,000 to build back in 1999

I think these computers would run best with Win2000

nice, Intel DK440LX should be Slot1. Im looking long time for a Slot2.
Yes win2k would be the best. But i like NT4 for DOS and multi CPU support.

Lol.
Looks like an expensive build.
From what I remember back around year 2000 we were using Dell Servers with Dual Xeons in our server rooms running Win2000.
WinNT 4.0 was used around 1997-thru-2000 on Pentium-I thru Pentium-3 CPU’s
We use to teach WinNT 4.0 on Pentium 90 computers with 16mb thru 32mb RAM in our computer education classrooms

My DK440LX motherboard cost about $300 back around 1999
And that was allot of Money back then for a motherboard.
I think I paid about $150 for each CPU.
I only used 64mb of RAM because it was expensive too.
So were the SCSI hard drives.

How much do you think your motherboard cost back in year 2000 ?
What is the manufacture date on your motherboard and CPU’s ?

This was my personal home file server and webserver.
We were the First to have cable modem high speed internet in our area.
I think we had 50mb or 100mb a second internet service.

Hey also there is a Memory limit on WinNT 4.0 Server
I think it’s like a maximum of 2gb. of Memory.
You need to install the Service pack first before adding more memory.
You might also only need to use One CPU at initial install before applying the Service pack.

But I am not sure about the limitations so don’t quote me on this.

i bought another slot2 pair, SL4XZ 900MHz 2MB L2. Im not sure my board support the 1GHz because of FSB. So SL4XZ should be fine.
What i still dont get, why there was 2 variantes 2,8V and 5V/12V ??

Where do you find these Slot-2 motherboards ?
You can’t find them in USA ?

I have a few Intel Dual Slot-1 server motherboards I purchased when they were decommissioned and being liquidated for cheap.
But I have miss placed my box of Pentium-3 CPU’s so I can’t do anything with them until I find that box.
It’s somewhere in my Garage full of cardboard boxes.

OK FULL STOP.

Those cpus are NOT going to work in this board. In fact if you power those chips in the board, its likely to damage something.

You are required to use the "retail" 2.8v cpus. The 5/12v cpus are designed for OEM installations like Dell, Compaq, IBM, etc.

The fastest chips for this board are the SL4XY chips: https://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL4XY.html
They are also unobtanium. I haven't seen a single one on ePay in the better part of a decade.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Yes that are the 133FSB CPUs that dont work. I just put them in for testing if anything fits. 😀

Im waiting for the correct CPUs, SL4XZ. The board itself is able to run 12v/5V CPUs. I have both VRMs. Officially its 550MHz supported, but pretty sure the 900MHz FSB100 will also work. I found all the bios updates, i will see..

For the Case, im not going time correct and use a north xl from fractal.

One question i still dont know is, do i really need the AUX power connector? Manual say i need it when board has heavy load, whatever that means.. But i ordered me some cables to build that connector..

The SL4XZ is NOT the correct processor for this board. DO NOT INSTALL A 12V/5V CPU into a board unless it EXPLICITLY STATES it is compatible. I looked through the manual, and it makes NO mention of 5/12 processors.

The 5/12 processors have integrated voltage regulators. the 2.8v cpus do not. If a slot-2 motherboard has separate voltage regulators AS YOUR DOES, it means it is designed for the 2.8V processors.

Why is it written on the VRM ports that it is capable to run 12/5V ?
