Hi,

Recently I went down the ATI Radeon 9550 artifact repair hole (for the 11th time 😀 ). Currently I am in the process of swapping memory chips for (hopefully) working ones in hopes of removing the artifacting.

Now, I got curious as to what memory chips like to fail often, and which live the longest (since these series only have RAM issues unlike the R9700 which had core BGA issues iirc(or was that R9800?)).

Currently, out of the 3 R9600/R95x0 cards I own:
Two are artifacting, one with Samsung K4D551638D-TC, one with Elixir N2D512H16CT-51B.
One is currently working fine with Hynix RAM (can't write down the model yet 🙁 )

Since the two artifacting ones were mangled by me during repairs, I can't experiment with hynix RAM (due to there being more faults than before which may potentially screw up my results). And I can't be fully sure that hynix RAM lasts longer than the other two.

What are your experiences with these cards? Did you have similar experiences to mine? Did you ever try to replace the RAM for other model? If so, was it successful?

There are some cards with Samsung BGA memory, same as on the 9800Pros - had them failing in the same fashion. Hadn't had any TSOP memory failures apart from K4D261638E-TC36 on a Radeon 9600TX, which is a 9500Pro in disguise.

Had some Elixir memory failures on other cards, like 9250s.

For TSOP memory I feel there is no special "good" brand.

Did you have any Hynix RAM failures? Can be any R9xx0 card.

Not that I can think off my head. BGA fails I had so far where mostly Samsung and one Infineon case. TSOP were Samsung and Elixir. At least these are most prominent in my memories.

Aha. So this should conclude that hynix could be a viable replacement for bad Samsung/Elixir memory.

Have you ever tried swapping elixir/samsung TSOP for hynix? Did it work?

Sorry for asking so much questions, but I can't find any RV300/350 cards for sale at a reasonable price to experiment with.
