Send it back, they gave you AGP by mistake, everything is PCIe now... 🤣

Just kidding, hope it does good for you.

Thanks! The card works fine, but wow... loud fan under load; quiet when idle, though. The cheap price makes up for the dumb price I paid for an Asrock 775Dual-VSTA on the way as I wanted to see how much better it might perform with an E7600 versus a 4800+

Another pretty good deal I thought; $45 shipped. This one also works fine, but I had to stumble about to get drivers to load. They installed manually but not with any ATI package, and I was unable to view any graphics card settings. I found a blurb on a Tom's hardware review mentioning they had to use the manufacturer drivers, so I've downloaded those (and a BIOS update) and will also test this card again with the 775Dual-VSTA.

I had one of those, and the exchange I had with Radeon's tech support still angers me. I had a similar experience with the drivers even though I went through their site and correctly chose the card, the OS, that it was AGP, and the drivers wouldn't install. I found some on the site of another manufacturer of an HD 4650 AGP, and they worked without having to manually install by way of Device Manager.

A couple of years went by, and I was then going to set my mother up with this card in a 939 system running Windows 7. I was sure that they would have sorted this out by now, but nope, and I again found a set that worked from card maker's site. I then emailed Radeon, telling them that the driver package they have on their site for the AGP version of the HD 4650 did not work properly. I received a reply telling me that it is an older card, and the newer driver pack will not work. I responded saying I know the latest drivers won't work, but the ones you have on your site that are specifically for the AGP version of this card didn't work properly, but the response I received was boilerplate nonsense, and I gave up. I haven't purchased a new Radeon video card since then.

That isn't just for the 4650 - I had similar issues with a AGP 3450 on XP.

Yesterday I visited a recycling center and started salvaging some things. I will go at least one day a week, I am looking for parts and pieces of PCs created in my country in the 70s and 80s, to rebuild and restore.
I got
-two big ALR 486 motherboards. One needs the CPU and cache cards. The bad thing is that almost all the slots are EISA.
-Foxconm M396F. in good state. the battery was already starting to leak
-Soyo SY-5VA. has cannibalized voltage regulators
-a Socket 5 board that I have not yet identified
-Olivetti PC1050. the Olivetti M24 motheboard. I have to find the video and expansion cards. and a missing switch. the battery was already starting to leak

sound cards
-Sound Blaster 16 CT2940, had a transistor cannibalized, I need to find a replacement
-ESS Formosa MPB 000074
-AOpen FX-3D, in poor condition

graphics cards
-3D Prophet 4000XT (Kryo gpu)
-Paradise Bali 2 (already tested, OK)
-Ati Rage 128 Pro Ultra, two missing smd cap in the back
-Nvidia GeForce 6600, some capacitors crushed but easy fix

a Pinacle Systems TV receiver

several PIII CPUs, from slot to socket , I will upgrade my Compaq Deskpro EN.
some FDD, HDD , CD and DVDs drives
a couple of very small ATX PSUs

The damage to some cards is due to bumps and scratches. everything has been deep cleaned. So far I have only tried the Paradise Bali 2 which is OK.

Everything cost me 0 (zero), only two long walks. and everything will cost me zero, because I will take material to recycle, it will be an exchange.

$26 shipped.

You win some, you lose some, but that purchase was most definitely a win! I paid over four times that much for a 7800 GS AGP that has a much less impressive cooler.

I picked up a pair of XFX Silent 7950 GTs for 50 bucks shipped, I thought that was a pretty nice deal, they dont come along very often but its great when a good deal comes along, especially on eBay.

That is a great deal, even more so if you have the 610m(s). I bought just one of the 570m version in the box and that cost me $45 shipped. Which version is yours; the 550, the 570, or the 610?

Not so lucky as they are both the 550m versions. These do however run at 570 out of the box due to being OC versions.

The 610m versions of this card are rather hard to find and people who do list them know they are so they tend to go for 100 USD a pop, which is too much for a 7950GT.

(I personally consider Linux sound to be a total mess. ALSA, PulseAudio, PipeWire... )

+ JACK + OSS

No, it IS a mess.

It just works on my Ubuntu, but I didn't even register that PulseAudio was replaced by PipeWire, and I'm like "oh, here we go again..."

It's been solid so far, but I already encountered weird bugs on and off...

Another mess is bluetooth support. Having to dig out the terminal everytime I want to use my bluetooth mouse is NOT a good user experience.

In Linux's defense, Bluetooth is a mess on every OS I used it on.

From my experience, the only desktop operating system where it seems to always work smoothly is Apple's MacOS.

I can't use Apple products. It's against my conscience regardless of technical qualities.

Not all that retro, but definitely retro useful, I hope. Could not resist this thrift pickup of a Micro Solutions, Backpack CD-R... Now I've got a couple of USB externals and a cheapie generic parallel port case, but since this was a brand name in parallel port drives, I thought it would be great for compatibility with about everything that's hard to add an ODD to. I still like using CDs and reading old coverdisk and shareware CDs on period hardware. The manuals and cables were really mummified in multiple plastic bags, and all taped up, I could tell it had the PCMCIA card, and the parallel cable, I missed that it didn't have original CD or power adapter, I'll check back tomorrow in case those are there but separated to the CD and adapter racks, but I can probably make something work and find the drivers. This is supposed to work in DOS 95, 98, 2000, XP. Not sure about burning capability in DOS but wasn't expecting it. 3 way interfaces, USB, parallel AND PCMCIA (A parallel convertor card???)

Edit: good ole minus zero prolly has my ass covered... https://www.minuszerodegrees.net/backpack_cdr … kpack_cdrom.htm
EditII: possibly the model reviewed here.. https://www.cnet.com/reviews/micro-solutions- … 10x-40x-review/

Yissssss, went back and found the power adapter at that thrift... had to pay $2 for it but at least I didn't have to order one for $8 plus shipping.

Recycling centers are always nice finds.

I bought this Yamaha PCI sound card with an additional board and an ATI Radeon AGP graphics card.

I picked up this Creative Nomad Jukebox . It came complete in the box. I love that it had Creative rechargeable batteries in it. I put new batteries in it though.
I also found an NEC S/33 Laptop which i didnt take pics of. I dont have a power cable for it so I cant test it yet....
