AsRock ConRoe865PE, possibly the fastest agp8x/win9x-compatible motherboard there is. Seller says he's installed modded bios for 45nm wolfdale support. We'll see tonight 😉 Also it's recapped with japanese caps

Is this better than the Gigabyte GA-P43T-ES3G ?
If so Why ?

i have the GA-P43T-ES3G and im pretty sure its not 100% win98 compatible
wrong graphics slot.. wrong chipset.. wrong everything

that board is a waste running windows XP even because it can take 16gb ram, better for a hackintosh or win7

As far as I understand. Then PCI-E is rather troublesome, to get going, fully on Win98. So the fact that it has PCI-E. Mmmmm...?!
It can take 16gb? Uhhh.... Yup. Win7, Unix, Linux or Hackintosh are probably the best ones for that.
Speaking of Hackintosh. OsX is not build for anything non-Apple, so how will it perform on Vista with all service packs and updates?
I am thinking... OsX not build for x86 and makes it rather troublesome to get installed. Vista build for x86, though troublesome to get running perfectly.

You can certainly build a pcie win98 pc, but as for how trouble-free that would be, it will remain to be seen. Best 775 PCIE board is Gigabyte EP45-UD3P rev 1.0 imho. 1156 and 1366 boards are an option too, they still have native PCI slots, as well as integrated IDE and Floppy controllers. No win98 drivers available, but as long as you add your own graphics card, sound card and network card, it should work for the most part.

Not trying to be a debbie downer but I never understood the point of Windows 98 builds on Core Duo/Core 2 Duo builds.

Picked up an early three button Logitech serial mouse, an early 1993 Matrox PCI graphics card and an ISA SCSI card for a 386 build of mine. Fun day at the recycle center although, it looked more like a 1980s/90s computer store.

Well in *theory* being able to run Win98 on a modernish setup would be nice for those not interested in dealing with the expense of old hardware....with PCI sound cards that do good DOS emulation (Live, YMF724), and some PCIe graphics card that work it would be an easy way to get going, as you can buy full C2D rigs for about $40 where I live, everything included. Of course, if you just want easy DOS gaming just use DOSBox which I still do for some things (weird old graphics modes, painless GUS support).

For me, doing a PCIE win98 build could make sense if you could put 2 different graphics cards and make it multiboot 98, XP and 7, and thus cover a very broad range of games on a single machine. I know agent_x007 here has done just that, he has a socket 1366 build with gtx 780ti and 7800 gtx multibooting bloody everything. As for C2D on AGP like with that Conroe865PE board, well, it again makes sense for a high performance win98 build with like a 6800 ultra or x850xt pe or something, where you are sure the cpu is not holding back anything, not to mention that it will run a lot more efficient than a hot and power hungry pentium 4 or athlon 64

Yes, it has full win98se support with drivers and everything, and has AGP8x slot instead of PCI-E. It's because of the intel 865pe chipset it has, which is actually a pretty old chipset, usually used for socket 478 motherboads for pentium 4. This limits it to 800fsb and DDR 400, but in turn has drivers available for win98se, and really even with the limitations put in place it still shouldnt hold back any AGP graphics card, not even HD3850

Seller photos, I'll not actually get to see them in person until next year. I don't know the model numbers either.
Hopefully they are working nicely after a clean ~

Found this for cheap locally, supposed to be Quadro4 900 XGL, tho I dont see any markings identifying it as such. Hopefully I can mod it into a GF4 Ti4600
