It really is slower than a ti 4200? What are the specs of the machine you tested it in?

Athlon64 3000+ on an Asus K8V-MX with 2 GB DDR400 RAM running WindowsXP + SP3.

In Quake 2 I get 650 FPS at 640x480 on the Ti4200 and 12660 points in 3DMark 2001SE (default test). With the FX5700LE Quake 2 gets only 450 FPS at 640x480 while 3DMark 2001SE scores just 9935 points.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2

Bought this ASUS PTGV-DM today. Only bought it because it's an ITX socket 479 (a mobile socket on a desktop board that I don't have in my collection) and includes backplate, card reader (always handy), heatsink and suitable PSU. Cost more than I would normally pay for a similar board (after shipping and import taxes), but the PSU and cooler made it almost a no-brainer for a near complete build. Originally out of an HP system, so I don't expect much out of it in terms of overclocking. Don't expect it to arrive for 2 to 4 weeks.

What are your plans?

Just to be able to test CPUs. I aim to have boards for every socket I can afford 😀

That's very interesting. What driver version?

I bought a Matrox Mystique 220 so I can plan to someday, one day, down-the-line, play the Matrox version of Mechwarrior 2.

That sounds like fun. Mech Warrior 2 is one of my favorite games. I bought my PowerVR PCX2 specifically to get the very best experience from what is arguably the best accelerator for this game.

There is a really good video that compares all of the different accelerators at the time for this game. The Voodoo 1 was very disappointing.

For the Ti4200 I used 40.72 drivers, and for the 5700LE I used 56.64.

Yep, I watched all of the videos previously and I have all the possible versions of Mechwarrior 2 and the cards to play them. The Mystique was the last one I finally broken down and bought.

I would think that the 5700 LE (128-bit) would have been competitive. It seems like you really need a regular 5700 or Ultra to approach the GeForce 4 Ti series.

Let us know how it goes. I happen to really like the look of the original software rendered version for DOS, as this is what I grew up playing. But it's nice to have the PowerVR option for the extra textures and visual effects that are missing.

The training missions is actually one of the best parts of the game. I love the instructor.

Today's pickup is the last Rage-based card I will add to my retro-equipment: ATI Rage Fury Maxx.

It's been over 20 years since I bought a new ATI/AMD-based discrete video card, but there was a time when I wouldn't buy anything else. The 1st video card I owned as part of the 1st (and last) OEM PC I bought was an integrated ATI Rage Pro inside a Compaq Presario (whatever AMD-based model was available in the last quarter of '98 with a K6II@380MHz).

The first discrete video card I bought within 6-8 months of the Compaq for my 1st PC build with an Asus P2B with a Pentium II@400MHz as the base was an ATI Rage 128 Pro. I remember being very insistent toward my co-worker helping me with the build about sticking with ATI. After this one, some kind of Radeon from "Sapphire" would be the last ATI card I would ever buy new.

Bottom photo from top left up-down to the bottom right:

Rage Pro Turbo/XPERT98 PCI 8MB
Rage LT Pro AGP 8MB
Rage XL AGP 8MB
Rage 128 GL/XPERT128 AGP 16MB
Rage 128 Pr0/Rage Fury Pro AGP 32MB
Rage 128 Pro x2/Rage Fury MAXX AGP 32MB x2 (64MB)

(I also have an ATI Rage 128 VR integrated on a FIC-6130 motherboard and a Rage 128 Ultra not shown in the photos.)

Nice to see another boxed Fury Maxx, I wonder how many boxed are in collections, its the third I have seen on Vogons. Also awesome collection of boxed ATI cards!

Hehe, the Mystique was the first I bought - back in 1996. The game never quite caught me, but the graphics sure blew my mind.
People recommended the Microsoft Sidewinder for it, due to its vertical third axis.

I like jumpers.

Purchased another NEC USB card with a different chipset. The 3rd now.
Soon I can tell which NEC chip is the best for retro machines.
Will post the results in the sticky thread.

Mobile 479 socket were interesting but boards cost a lot when they came out.
I don't have import duties. 😀

Isn't there a mod to be done to step it up? Or is the core the culprit?
Can't remember all those LE models...

From what I gather, the LE model is a heavily downclocked FX5700 with either a 128-bit or a 64-bit memory bus (varies by manufacturer).

It might be possible to regain some performance through overclocking, but the memory bus will still drag the LE card down.

Ok, it's a dead end. You must like it as it is.

I did the same thing and have a couple different chip versions. I think they were all the same compatibility-wise. The important thing to know is that it's the VIA USB controllers won't work on some early Intel chipsets.

VIA VT6212L did work on Triton II, when I did test it. But VIA chipsets suffer a lot under slow CPUs. While the NEC chipsets didn't reach the full 35MB/s on a somewhat modern board, like the VIA did, they ended up being faster on my Super Socket 7 board than the VIA card because they were less affected by slow down.
The different NEC cards might be identical compatibility-wise, but not speed-wise. D720100AS1 was a bit slower than D720101GJ. 22MB/15MB. vs 25MB/18MB. The one I purchased today has a D720101F1 chip.

Seller only had the one lot (board, psu, etc), so you are unlikely to find the exact same deal. I paid $80 for the lot, shipped. You might find a similar board, but I'm not as sure about finding a compatible psu, as it's not standard atx.

Thanks! Having the ATI boxes, in particular, as opposed to other boxed cards I own and reviewing the marketing, specs, artwork, and text really takes me back... I'm sure everyone experiences the same.

I've actually never played MechWarrior 2 until I fired it up for testing the Mystique 220. I liked what I saw, though, and I look forward to playing for real, hopefully soon.
