I was going to put this Hercules 3D Prophet (ATI) Radeon 9800XT in to my Asus slot 1 P2B mobo, but the AGP connector on the video card would not fit in to the AGP slot. So, I put it in my Epox 8KTA3+Pro mobo instead - see photo.

I think ~13000 3D Marks is quite good, for 3DMark 2001 s.e. The mobo's FSB is set to 152 MHz, and the mobile barton 3000+ rated CPU is running at 2.51 GHz.

13K seems about right for that system... Back in the day, I was running a slightly overclocked Thoroughbred-B 2600, about 2.2ghz thereabouts, with a 9800Pro, and that system scored a little over 12K. The extra CPU speed and slightly faster GPU clocks in your system would account for the extra few hundred 3Dmarks.

looks like a very good score, only got 12667 on my P4 3.06 northwood rig (same gfx card)

I increased the mobo's FSB by 1 point, from 152 to 153, and in doing so, I broke the 13000 barrier. Actually, this test is a bit daft, because I installed Windows ME for this "153 FSB" test. The previous "152 FSB" test used Win98SE. (I also ran the "152" test on ME, and got a score about 20 points less than on Win98SE.)

I tried 154 FSB, but this didn't work. 3DMark 2001 s.e. quit back to the desktop. It's not a mobo or caps problem. Instead, it's because the XP-M 3000+ CPU won't overclock beyond about 2.53 GHz, without experiencing some problems.

I do like this mobo. Increase its FSB, and you see a healthy improvement in 3D performance. I've just thought of a useful test. Rather than set the FSB to ~150 with an XP-M 3000+, I might try setting the FSB to ~160, and use a slower CPU. Begin Edit: I am stupid. Rather than use a slower CPU, I can simply use the same 3000+ rated CPU, and set its multi to a lower value. That can be done in software, using CPUMSR.exe. However, if it's possible to wire-mod these CPUs, then a different slower CPU would be preferable. End Edit.

Amigaz, maybe you could overclock your P4 rig, to break the 13k barrier?

I've dropped the CPU speed from 2529 to 2498 MHz. But what's this, a higher 3D Mark score? Well, although the CPU speed has decreased, and also the CPU's multi has been dropped from 16.5 to 16, I increased the FSB from 153 to 156.

RG100 you'd be a lot cooler if you had a GeForce FX 5950 Ultra like mine.
😁 😁 😁 😁

I've got this monster of 3D power running a smooth 500 MHz core / 450 MHz RAM. 😉 And no you aren't allowed to test any DirectX 9 games on it because that's not fair.

Oh and what do you guys think of the repurposed Pentium MMX heatsink on my GeForce 3? Passive, no nonsense cooling. 😀 Color matched no less!

I love these Accelero S1 / S2 coolers. They are rather cheap, fit just about anything, and their cooling capability is superb. The S2 there actually fits the GF3 as well but it is extreme overkill for it. 😁 I thermal epoxied that nice Pentium heatsink to it instead.

Just be sure to avoid those cards with the PCIe->AGP bridge chip that messes up the position of the GPU on the card. Like say GeForce 6600 or 7300+. Can't work with those cards.

I need to get a Radeon 9700/9800/X800 AGP of some sort again eventually here. I just have a Radeon 9600 around right now, but it is actually really excellent and beats the GeForce FX 5900 in some things. What's amazing is how much better the image quality of the R300-type chips is compared to all NVIDIA stuff prior to GF8 or so. GF3=puke. 😀 Anisotropic and Anti-Aliasing quality in particular.

It's a Dell so my overclocking option are zero:
Rambus box *updated*

Got the same "beasty" cooler on my GF 5950 Ultra which runs alot cooler than the Radeon 9800XT so it doesn't need the the fans on the massive heatsink

Nice coolers! Including the GF3 one. 😀 I quite like my Leadtek GF3. Makes Jedi Knight look OK, I think. I had a look on ebay for Accelero, and they seem plentiful. What's the difference between S1 and S2? Thanks.

Hehe, I had a 5950 once and it caught fire! (2nd photo)

I've had my eye on the Accelero's for a while now. Very interesting coolers (and not expensive at all 😀 ).
The green heatsink looks very good!
I 'think' the S2 had better compatibility regarding what cards it can be installed on...dunno for sure though

And hissing graphics cards...YUK!

Wow swaaye! I just love those cool passive heatsinks on the graphics cards!

S1 compatibility
listed at the link. It's a beefed up version. If you can fit it, it's the one to get, but it won't work on most old stuff. It is overkill for most cards anyway. It's really designed for Radeon 3870 and GeForce 8800GT heat output.

S2 compatibility
This fits on just about anything except boards with GPUs in odd positions like the cards with the PCIe-AGP bridge chip. It has quite a few mounting holes to choose from. To give you an idea of its limits, it is more than adequate for both my X850XT and 5900U.

BTW with the thermal tape on the ramsinks the best way to get them to adhere well is to clean the chips with alcohol, attach the sinks, and then use a hair drier to heat them while pressing on the sink. Don't be afraid to get them hot. This really gets the adhesive to grip.

I've had two FX 5900s and both have had hissing VRMs. It's especially annoying with silent coolers. They get loudest when doing 3D.

For anyone in the US, these things may be a better bargain than the Accelero. I picked up a couple awhile back, mainly because I was a few dollars short for getting a "free shipping on $99 and up" deal, and I'm quite pleased with 'em.

That is really cheap! Good thing I already got one or 2 laying around somewhere (bought NIB for €5 each a couple years ago) as I don't live in the states.

The coil noise is a real nuisance, and it can happen to basically any part that uses more then moderate power. Had an ASUS TUSL2-C hiss...ended up giving the board away(!!!) because the hissing was totally LOUD, there was no way I was gonna be using it, no matter how happy I was when I initially got that board.
Also once bought 5-odd identical PSU's brand new (for cheap of course! 😜) and one had a softer but still distinguishable hiss. Maybe I'll try that glue trick on a couple of those copper coils and see (hear) if it helped. Otherwise that unit will probably end up being given away also 🤣.

And it's a shame many of these aftermarket coolers won't fit on them AGP cards that use a PCI-E bridge chip, as this kinda excludes all of the best AGP cards from receiving a more silent cooling solution.
Afterwards, I'm all the more happy that the 3 best AGP cards I bought when new (2xGF7600GS and one HD4670) have larger heatsinks. The 2 7600GS's are passive, though I screwed a big slow moving 8cm fan to both of them. Silent, and very cool!

I think silence is golden...or at the least something that's not excruciatingly loud.
It's one of the reasons I liked the Radeon 9600 so much when it was newer, and it's still a pretty good card 😀

Personally I don't like using epoxy to attack heatsinks, as it is kinda...permanent.

That's just baddd.
So those cards can burn up like that? Spontaneous combustion!

At some point in the past someone did something similar to one of my Kyros. Can't remember now if it was the 4000XT or the 4500 but it runs fine even without a fan.
