Currently looking for an NEC NL6448AC30-07 TFT display so I can install one in the AMS laptop and surprisingly, the 5x86-P75 3.3V CPU works in the AMS laptop, but I need to find a way to set the CPU to 133MHz (4x clock speed). The Austin has 20MB RAM and a ceramic Intel i486 DX4-100 CPU.

Those NL6448AC30-XX screens are what my NEC Versa M/75 and 40EC use (my P/75 is an NL8060 model of some kind as it's 800x600 - the first four digits are the first two of each parameter of the screen resolution, but those ALSO used the 640x480 screens....I think it was the HC models). The last two numbers after the hyphen should not matter as they are all pretty interchangeable with each other. My NL6448AC30-10 out of the M/75 was pretty terrible and washed out (looks like a bad DTSN LCD), so I put the NL6448AC30-06 I had in my 40EC in there when the M/75 still had a case (it's case literally started to fall apart - bad - I'm using the P/75 now).

I find these screens on e-bay, sometimes for a decent price. It seems not just were they used in the NEC Versa line of laptops but they also were used in a lot of industrial equipment and embedded apps stuff and seem to still have some need in that area.

Yeah and I was attempting to connect the display to my AMS laptop and that didn't work out too well as I forgot the BIOS is strictly DSTN on the AMS.

Currently been cleaning the Austin laptop and preparing to fix the broken hinge and I need to know which method is better to fix the hinge issues: longer screws (not damaging the chassis) or epoxy.

With me its the opposite. The more I use the older Windows 9x versions, the more I hate the actual version.

Hah?

Windows 3.11 = Great!!
Windows 95 = Good
Windows 98 = Very good
Windows 2000 = Awesome
Windows Me = Garbage
Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 = Sh*t
Windows 10 = Even with all the Tylenol in the world, I cannot avoid the headache that is to use this pile of sh*t. Wait, I can. Just uninstall it.

IMO Microsoft stopped doing good stuff after 2000.

More like:
Windows 3.11 and everything before = Garbage
Windows NT 3.5, 4.0 = Pretty good
Windows 95 = Not so good
Windows 95 OSR2 = Pretty good
Windows 98 = Not so good
Windows 98 SE = OK
Windows 2000 = Good
Windows Me = Not so good
Windows XP (after SP2) = Great
Windows Vista = not so good
Windows 7 = Great!
Windows 8 = Not so good
Windows 8.1 = Pretty good
Windows 10 = Amazing

And there are also all sorts of Server versions which are usually pretty good.

Check out my AmiBay and eBay for ISA and PCI card, 286/386/486 Pentium motherboards and more.

Windows 10 is a meh experience on a fresh install, but if you give it some Windows 7 TLC, it becomes a power tool.

Looking for a motherboard? You can find it in Ultimate Hardware 2019: http://www.win3x.org/uh19/motherboard/search

You can continue to mince words all you want. The Service Packs for XP contained Windows Updates and the Windows Activation components. No kernel rewrites. Vista had a complete kernel rewrite in SP2.

Fuck*n complete utter LIE. Windows XP SP2/Win2003 SP1 kernel/hal/basedrv is so damn different from Windows SP1/Win2003 RTM, that you would call it an "Step-up" OS upgrade rather than a SP. I personally know it because ReactOS investigations have come to this very conclusion. That's why when they move from NT4 compatibility, they targeted Win2003 SP1/WinXP SP2 rather Win2000 or WinXP SP1/Win2003 RTM .

If you say "Vista had a complete kernel rewrite in SP2" then you can say the same from WinXP SP2, and by extension Win2003 SP1.

OH NO!

Not this old shit again. This discussion has been around since the windows 3.x/9x days and I am TIRED!!!!!!!!!!

I have seen each and every &^@$%$ version of windows. Like anything else on this planet: each to its own. There is no best or worst version of windows. It always depends on what you use it for, personal preferences, timeframe and what else was out there.

Can we PLEASE put this BS to bed before it gets out of hand and perma-bans are going out? I have seen this on too many forums too many times in the last 2 decades.

Back on topic...

Going through and old 430meg hdd which was in my old 486dx33 system back in '94. That system wa originally a 286/16 until I fitted a pre-owned 486 mobo in it. Has Qemm/DesqviewX, Windows 3.1 and Geoworks 2.0 on it.

I love Windows 10, but I'm really not concerned if Microsoft sees me visiting Vogons and playing games. I think privacy concerns are really the only valid argument against 10.

Of course Flat design has been proven to be inefficient when compared to the designs that came before it, scientifically. Flat design is fashion over function. You can look into it but basically they discovered a flat design takes users longer to recognize and interact with causing all operations with user interaction to be slower than other traditional design types.

Flat design is a pox on user interfaces. Look to your own experience, I know I've acidentally clicked on windows behind the one I'm trying to interract with many times when they overlap because with flat design its very hard to distuinguish those overlapping windows.

Like anything else on this planet: each to its own.

Please take the windows discussion into a windows forum or at least into its own thread.

On topic: I am adding chipset info to the boards in UH19.

I just ordered some EDO to replace the FPM memory I had in my P133 machine. Can't wait for it to get here, do you think I will notice a performance improvement?

Sorry. Some systems were designed to use EDO ram only. There isn't really that much of a performance difference between the two.

It's weird my manual suggests that when running at 66Mhz FSB it should use EDO instead of FPM, but then it says you can still use FPM in 66MHz mode, I was thinking that maybe there might be a performance penalty there...

If I remember rightly at the same clock speed FPM is a tad faster.

🤣... win10 is a bit of a joke. moving around control panel applets does not make a new OS. windows updates have also been a damn mess...

i'd say win2k and win7 were my faves. vista and 8 were crap. ME i didnt even use. I agree that 98se and 95osr2 were better than their original counterparts.
