RAM: Dozens of sticks of RAM ranging from used PC600-53 Non-ECC RAM to PC3200 Non-ECC RAM.

Eventually, I would like to build multiple systems, ranging from a DOS gaming system to Windows XP gaming systems, but with more interest on Windows 98 SE / 2000 gaming systems, if only because of occasional retro LAN gaming some friends and I would like to do. But mostly, it's just something I find to be enjoyable, and fun for all of the nostalgia that comes along with playing the game natively. I had two other complete systems (98SE and Windows XP) already built, but they were both heavily damaged during a move across country a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed playing on those systems on rainy Saturdays, or when friends came over for their own nostalgia kicks.

So my questions! Are any of these processors just not worth keeping? They were all acquired (gifted or picked up) *new in box*, but I'm not particularly attached to any one of them. What kind of advice do you guys have for finding quality motherboards to go along with these processors? Are there any recommended guides for motherboard hunting? I had two other motherboards, but both ended up having a lot of capacitor failure while in storage. And again, due to moves across the country, I ended up scrapping them instead of trying to repair them. Are there any particular graphics cards that I should look for? Any advice on finding good quality or new quality IDE hard drives that would work on these systems?

And really, are the Vogons wiki guides just sort of the best bet for learning what to look for? Are there any other sites or guides for picking out components for retro builds? Also, where are the VOGONS t-shirts? (=

Thanks, everybody!

**Edit**: Also, out of curiosity, is there a good chart somewhere to see how Intel and AMD processors are binned down? Like, the AMD 450 X3 processor that I have is an AMD Phenom II X4 (IIRC), binned down with a disabled core. What's a good place to check this sort of thing?

Nice that you have all these CPU's new out of the box..
I would propose:

|------------------------------------------Win98(SE)--------------------------------------------------------|
PII Xeon 450 / Athlon 1333 / Duron 1800 / Athlon XP 2700+ / P4 3000 (S478) / Athlon 64 3000+ (S754)
-------------------------------------------|--------------------------------------WinXP---------------------|

|--------------------------------------------WinXP----------------------------------------------------------|
Athlon 64 3200+ (S939) / Athlon 64 3500+ (S939) / Celeron D 3.20 Ghz / Xeon 3.60 GHz / Athlon II 450

I feel like I lucked out with a few of the processors. But one thing that I'm thinking is that I need something slower than the PII Xeon 450 MHz for certain older DOS games that wouldn't play so well on too "new" or too "fast" of a processor. Like Descent I and II. Do you have any recommendations there, in terms of what to look for?

I'm not planning on building one with each processor. (= I'll probably build two Windows 98SEs, maybe three if another friend contributes for the hardware or I get lucky and get more parts for free or cheaply. I'll probably build one Windows XP system, and one Windows XP 64-bit system. I've never had a Windows XP 64-bit system before, and I'm curious about how some things would run on it. My original XP system was an Athlon XP 2600+, if I remember correctly.

There is a very real part of me that wants to build a Windows Me system. I never ran it personally, and only had limited experience with it on friends' prebuilt Gateway or Dell PCs. Any thoughts there? (=

The two best platforms for slowdown machines are currently Socket 7 (including Super Socket 7) and VIA C3 (Eden) on Socket 370.

For an "ultimate DX9/XP machine" the Athlon x3 AM3 processor seems like a great candidate. Am3/3+ motherboards are still readily available new/used. Pair it with any number of GPU's and you have a good XP rig! For 98 the Thunderbird 1333mhz seems like a good bet. Find a Socket A motherboard supporting 266 fsb and ISA and you are sitting pretty! But ya for earlier DOS stuff you need a socket 7/ SS7 or 486 class kinda setup

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

You can see at this thread how you can handle with slowing down your machine. It gives you a good overview.
(In case that you don't want to build a 386 or/and 486 platform these cache tricks are great...).

Those are WinXP era stuff, if you ask me. Shure you can find Win9x compatible motherboards for some of them, and build something like a Win98se box on steroids. They are just better suited for XP stuff. Socket Super 7 are better suited for Win9x/Dos gaming. C3 too as mentioned. I just have no experience with that combination, so I can not say anything about C3's.
