Eventually, I would like to build multiple systems, ranging from a DOS gaming system to Windows XP gaming systems, but with more interest on Windows 98 SE / 2000 gaming systems, if only because of occasional retro LAN gaming some friends and I would like to do. But mostly, it's just something I find to be enjoyable, and fun for all of the nostalgia that comes along with playing the game natively. I had two other complete systems (98SE and Windows XP) already built, but they were both heavily damaged during a move across country a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed playing on those systems on rainy Saturdays, or when friends came over for their own nostalgia kicks.
So my questions! Are any of these processors just not worth keeping? They were all acquired (gifted or picked up) *new in box*, but I'm not particularly attached to any one of them. What kind of advice do you guys have for finding quality motherboards to go along with these processors? Are there any recommended guides for motherboard hunting? I had two other motherboards, but both ended up having a lot of capacitor failure while in storage. And again, due to moves across the country, I ended up scrapping them instead of trying to repair them. Are there any particular graphics cards that I should look for? Any advice on finding good quality or new quality IDE hard drives that would work on these systems?
And really, are the Vogons wiki guides just sort of the best bet for learning what to look for? Are there any other sites or guides for picking out components for retro builds? Also, where are the VOGONS t-shirts? (=
Thanks, everybody!
**Edit**: Also, out of curiosity, is there a good chart somewhere to see how Intel and AMD processors are binned down? Like, the AMD 450 X3 processor that I have is an AMD Phenom II X4 (IIRC), binned down with a disabled core. What's a good place to check this sort of thing?
