Haven't dealt with internal speeds before, just bus speed. Board originally came with a dx33 set to 2x internal speed.

The internal multiplier is just that: internal. You have no influence over it. Except when it's meant to be changed by software. Not on the 486.

Some dx4 are 2x compliant (2x50 is an official dx4-100 speed I would guess)
I don't know of any 2.5 compatible 486.

What is the exact model of your processor ? (sspec if intel would allow to check on cpu-world)

Yes it depends on the CPU mode. I did this with an AMD DX4 100 back in the old days. Had switches put into the case to let me control the multiplier and FSB, which let me run the machine from 50 MHz to 120 MHz 😀
