This post does not include models released after Sharp's buyout of Toshiba's PC division.

Model number identifiers:
dynabook: Japanese region (e.g. dynabook VX1)
0: Europe, the Middle East and Africa or Asia-Pacific region (e.g. Satellite 2430)
5: North American region (e.g. Satellite 2435)
Note: Some models were not available in all regions. For example, the Satellite M20 was an EMEA exclusive model and the dynabook Satellite J82 was a Japanese exclusive model. Most tend to be available in all regions, although they may not have the dynabook branding (e.g. libretto W100). North American and EMEA+Asia-Pacific models use a dash to indicate the configuration (e.g. A35-S1593 and P30-S701TD), while Japanese models use a slash or a space to indicate the configuration (e.g. WX/3727CDS or SS2110 DS10L/2).

Part number suffixes:
U: United States (of America)
A: Australia or New Zealand
C: Canada
E: Europe (, the Middle East and Africa)
L: Asia-Pacific
N: Nippon (Japan)
Note: I can't guarantee that this part number format is accurate for models released after Sharp's buyout.

UEFI and BIOS vendors:
BIOS: Toshiba, Phoenix
UEFI: Insyde, AMI
Note: PCI, PCI-E, USB, and LCD whitelists do not exist in Toshiba's notebooks. If you're still interested in BIOS modifications anyway, use https://github.com/LongSoft/ToshibaComExtractor for Toshiba BIOS images packed in .COM files. For models with a Phoenix BIOS, use Phoenix BIOS Editor or phcomp.exe and phxdeco.exe. I can't guarantee that these tools will be able to modify versions older or later than PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0. For UEFI-based models, use https://github.com/LongSoft/UEFITool.

Caution:

  • Leak-prone nickel-metal hydride RTC and BIOS batteries were mostly used in old to new Toshiba-designed models. These cells can't be replaced with lithium-ion coin cells. Outsourced old models that were not designed by Toshiba generally used a soldered lithium-ion coin cell. In newer models, these became removable.
  • Very old models with nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride battery packs may leak out electrolyte, be careful as these leaks could damage the motherboard.
  • Old and new thin models may use lithium-ion polymer pouch cells in their battery packs which have no way of venting out gas, eventually resulting in cell expansion from age. Thick models with lithium-ion cylindrical cells have pressure valves that are able to vent out excess gas, preventing the cell from expanding. Avoid all models with lithium-ion polymer cells if you don't want to risk a chance of a bloated battery.
  • All models equipped with a cold cathode fluorescent lamp backlit display panel will eventually develop a red or pink tint on the display due to age. The only fix is to replace the CCFL backlight or the entire panel itself. Light-emitting diode backlit panels do not have this problem, but they are not immune from aging. Keep in mind that CCFL backlit display panels are driven by an inverter, if the inverter fails the CCFL backlight will not get any power and leave the display panel dark. Anything shown on the display panel can still be seen, but only with a flashlight.
  • Models with a removable CPU may not necessarily be capable of accepting the fastest CPU available for its socket. Use MCExtractor to determine if your UEFI/BIOS accepts the CPU that you're upgrading to. If the UEFI/BIOS does not contain the appropriate microcode revision and platform, you must add it in manually via proprietary BIOS editors or hex editors. This is not guaranteed to work as some motherboards do not have a compatible VRM revision or UEFI/BIOS code to power or initialize the CPU.
  • Models with a removable GPU may not necessarily fully comply with MXM specifications. Some partially comply, such GPUs might have an MXM connector but their screw mounts and PCB shape do not follow the MXM specifications. Others are fully proprietary and do not follow MXM specifications at all, although these tend to be AGP-based GPUs.
  • Models with removable RAM are not guaranteed to comply with JEDEC standards. While all newer models do comply with JEDEC standards, older models may not. Some of them only accepted JEIDA or proprietary expansion cards.
  • Models with any form of PCI-based internal expansion slots (e.g. CardBus, ExpressCard, MiniPCI, MiniPCIE, M.2) are not guaranteed to support graphics cards. However, models using early 32-bit platforms may have no problems with graphics cards connected to their internal expansion slot. Newer models will likely run into PCI address space problems due to the TOLUD being set to 3 GiB or greater, which can't be changed as their UEFI/BIOS does not have a option to change it. A UEFI/BIOS modification might be necessary in this case.
  • Models produced in 5 March 1998 to 7 November 1999 with a floppy disk controller could potentially write corrupted data to a floppy disk. The patch seems to have been released decades ago, but I'm not sure if it has actually fixed the problem.

Warning: The A70/A75 has two design defects that may result in a sudden shutdown or a loose DC-in power socket. The forced shutdown is caused by the lack of grounding on the palmrest, causing any sort of static electricity conducted through the aluminium speaker mesh to reach the motherboard. The loose DC-in power socket is caused by cracked lead-free solder joints or a broken DC-in power socket pin, which could progress to a disconnected DC-in power socket (much worse). In some cases, the DC-in power socket pins may oxidize, leading to disconnected pins or a loose DC-in power socket. A lawsuit was involved regarding this problem.

Model suffixes:
-x: Generation indicator e.g. A40-A = 1st generation, A40-B = 2nd generation
D: AMD CPU
T: Touchscreen
W: 2-in-1 convertible

Caution: Manual fan control is nearly impossible on models that were built by Toshiba. A lot of them had some strange embedded controller software that doesn't expose any register related to fan control, so if this bothers you, avoid them. If you'd like to give it a shot, try http://rweverything.com/ or https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc. Overclocking is possible with Intel-based models in general, but I wouldn't suggest it as most of them struggle to keep the CPU's temperature low. If you have a modified cooling assembly or way to deal with the heat, use https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowe … p-throttlestop/ and do not exceed the maximum core voltage specified in your CPU's datasheet. AMD-based models do not support any form of overclocking, unless your model contains an engineering sample CPU. If you do have such a CPU, use https://www.overclock.net/threads/kaveri-over … -k15tk.1555362/ but be aware K15TK can't adjust the TDP. You must use RWEverything to locate the MSR that contains the TDP value, which is read-only on retail samples but is read-write on engineering samples. Refer to AMD's AMD64 Architecture Programmer's Manual volumes if you don't know where the TDP's MSR address resides, it should be there as a documented MSR.

Do not update the UEFI on 6th generation or later Intel-based models if you want to keep the ability to undervolt, as there is no feasible way to downgrade the UEFI due a restriction that Toshiba enforces unless you have an EEPROM programmer or a hex editor that can remove the restriction in the UEFI update utility. If you absolutely need the UEFI update that comes with the Plundervolt patch but want to reverse it, find a way to set bit 20 to 0 in MSR 0x194. If bit 20 in MSR 0x194 is not set to 0, MSR 0x150 will be read-only and undervolting will not be possible. This also affects any sort of writes to the IccMax bits in MSR 0x150, which is necessary to prevent EDP OTHER throttling. When that happens, the CPU will slow itself down by using clock modulation or a lower core clock multiplier even if the core temperature isn't at 100 C. The only indicator of EDP OTHER throttling can be seen in ThrottleStop's Limits window, or through MSR 0x64F with RWEverything. It may seem useless, but a lot of models are affected by this throttling due to a very low IccMax setting. To summarize: need undervolting and access to the IccMax bits? Don't update the UEFI to a version containing the Plundervolt patch.

Notes: The B40-A, C40-A, C50-A, C70-A, C70-B, C70-C, L50-A, L50-B, L70-A, and the NB10(T)-A were rebadged as Satellite Pro models. They aren't any different minus the color scheme, which is always a single tone matte or glossy black paint job.

The C70-A/C75-A, L70-A/L75-A, and the S70-A/S75-A share the same chassis and were the last models to feature a removable CPU (Socket G3, some are Socket G2). All models with a dedicated graphics chip are paired with NVIDIA Optimus or AMD Enduro and they do not contain a display multiplexer/MUX switch.

Notes: The X70-A/X75-A has a removable CPU (Socket G3), a standard MXM 3.0 Type B slot, four SO-DIMM slots, a half length MiniPCIE slot with a PCIE 2.0 x1 lane and a USB 2.0 connection, two standard SATA 3.1 slots and a slimline SATA 3.1 slot, a lithium-ion UEFI+RTC battery coin cell holder, and a removable battery pack containing lithium-ion cylindrical cells. Unlike the previous models, the X70-A/X75-A is not equipped with two tweeters and a subwoofer. Only two midrange speakers remain in the chassis, driven by a 2-watt amplifier integrated in the Conexant CX20755-11Z HD Audio codec.

The two 2.5-inch standard SATA bays accept 9.5 mm or shorter storage drives, and the slimline SATA bay accepts 9.5 mm or shorter optical drives. Try to stick with MXM cards that are known to work with LVDS/FPD-Link display panels, because the X70-A/X75-A has an LVDS/FPD-Link display panel, not an Embedded DisplayPort (EDP) display panel. Installing an MXM card without any video out or with EDP out will work though, considering the X70-A/X75-A doesn't have Advanced Optimus or a display multiplexer/MUX switch but has Optimus which allows it to use the integrated graphics core on the CPU to drive the display panel. This comes with a drawback, however. An MXM card without any video out would mean no output on both VGA and HDMI ports, which makes these ports useless unless they are driven by the integrated graphics core.

The Gigabit Ethernet controller is a Qualcomm QCA8171-B3 that is connected to the HM86 or HM87 PCH's PCIE 2.0 x2 lane. The card reader controller is a Realtek RTS5227 that is connected to the HM86 or HM87 PCH's PCIE 2.0 x1 lane. I have no idea if the RTS5227 is capable of interacting with SDIO cards like the Toshiba PA3370U-1BTM.

The X70-B is a rebadged Satellite P70-B with the Qosmio color scheme. It doesn't have any parts that can be interchanged with the X70-A/X75-A, only the storage drive, optical drive, and the SO-DIMMs can be transferred over.

All models in this list were not built by Toshiba:

Tecra series

Notes: The A50-A, W50-A, Z40-A, and Z50-A are equipped with a UEFI+RTC battery containing two nickel-metal hydride coin cells wrapped together and connected to a 2-pin JST plug. Others are equipped with one lithium-ion coin cell, but retains the packaging used in the aforementioned models. The C50-B is an exception as it is equipped with a battery coin cell holder. All models feature two SO-DIMM slots (four on the W50-A), an M.2-2230 slot with USB 2.0 and a PCIE 2.0 x1 lane (half length MiniPCIE on the A50-A, W50-A), a standard SATA slot on a ribbon cable (motherboard for the A50-A, W50-A; M.2-2280 NVME for the X40-D), a slimline SATA slot (doesn't exist on the X and Z series except for the Z50-C and Z50-D), and a removable battery pack containing lithium-ion cylindrical cells (non-removable lithium-ion polymer pouch cells for the Z50-A, Z50-B, Z40-A, Z40-B, Z40-C, and the X40-D). The standard SATA slot bay accepts 7 mm or thinner storage drives, the slimline SATA bay accepts 9.5 mm or thinner optical drives. Using any storage drive thicker than 7 mm for the standard SATA slot bay might be a bit of a stretch, even with the flexibility of the standard SATA slot on the ribbon cable.

The A50-A and the W50-A were the last models to feature a removable CPU (Socket G3), along with the older A50-A (dynabook Satellite B453/B553) with a Socket G2 CPU. Other models feature soldered CPUs. The A50-A's Japanese variant was the last model offered without a numpad that could accept keyboards not restricted to the Japanese language, with a catch: only the Satellite C40-A's keyboard in either language will work, and the two screw mounts on the bottom of the keyboard must be ripped off. The special function keys will remain the same as well, which means the C40-A's keyboard will be incorrectly labeled from the start. Something to keep in mind is the 'numpadless' variant's motherboard keyboard connector position, it has been shifted closer to the battery connector instead of being closer to the fan. This means you can't install a keyboard with the numpad on a 'numpadless' variant's motherboard, even if you had the matching palmrest housing.

The C series is the budget variant of the A series, lacking a pointing stick, WWAN card (replacing the optical drive), fingerprint reader, smart card reader, and a docking port. They can be easily told apart from the A series as they had only one color scheme: single tone matte black. The Z series is the premium variant of the A series, featuring everything the A series has but in a different color scheme: two tone matte silver and matte black with white hinge covers. However, two exceptions exist: the Z50-A and the Z50-B shared nothing in common with the A50-A, only till the Z50-C onwards shared parts with the A50-C.

The A40-C, A40-D, A50-A, A50-C, and the A50-D were rebadged as Satellite Pro models. They retain the Tecra design but lacked a pointing stick, WWAN card (replacing the optical drive), fingerprint reader, smart card reader, and a docking port. Rebadging was applied on the C40-C, C40-D, C50-B, C50-C, and the C50-D as well. However, they were rebadged under a different model code (e.g. C40-C = R40-C, C50-B = R50-B). Unlike the A series' differences, the Satellite Pro R series was very much a one to one copy of the C series. Only one specific configuration of the C50-B wasn't the same as its Satellite Pro rebadge, which was the keyboard. The Satellite Pro rebadge uses a island style keyboard, but that specific C50-B uses the old tile style keyboard. Key travel remains the same at 1.5 mm despite the difference in appearance.

The C50-C and the C50-D's Japanese variants are offered without a numpad, although they are somewhat uncommon. Compatible English keyboards do not exist for these models, unfortunately. Watch out for the lack of a webcam or microphone, too. These are not standard features and are optional for Japanese variants.

The A50-C and the Z50-C were the last models offered with a dedicated graphics chip with Optimus (NVIDIA GeForce 930M 2 GiB DDR3 SDRAM), but they were very rare. The Z40-C's successor is the X40-D. All models in this list were built by Toshiba.

Portege series

Notes: The R30-A, Z10T-A/Z15T-A, and the Z30(T)-A/Z35-A are equipped with a UEFI+RTC battery containing two nickel-metal hydride coin cells wrapped together and connected to a 2-pin JST plug. Others are equipped with one lithium-ion coin cell, but retain the packaging used in the aforementioned models. All models feature an M.2-2230 slot with USB 2.0 and a PCIE 2.0 x1 lane (half length MiniPCIE for the R30-A), soldered CPUs (Socket G3 CPU for the R30-A), and a removable battery pack containing lithium-ion cylindrical cells (non-removable lithium-ion polymer pouch cells for the X and Z series). The R30-A, R30-B, R30-C, R30-D, A30(T)-C, and the A30-D were the only models that featured a standard and slimline SATA slot. The standard SATA slot bay accepts 7 mm or thinner storage drives, and the slimline SATA slot bay accepts 9.5 mm or thinner optical drives.

The R30-A, R30-B, R30-C, R30-D, A30(T)-C, A30-D, Z30(T)-A/Z35-A, Z30(T)-B, Z30(T)-C, and the X30-D feature two SO-DIMM slots. The M.2-2242 slot with USB 2.0 is only available on certain configurations for the R30-A, R30-B, R30-C, R30-D, A30(T)-C, A30-D, Z10T-A/Z15T-A, Z20T-B, Z20T-C, Z30(T)-A/Z35-A, Z30(T)-B, and the Z30(T)-C. The Z20T-B, Z20T-C, X20W-D, Z30(T)-C, and the X30-D feature an M.2-2280 SATA slot. NVME storage drives can only be used in the X20W-D and the X30-D. The Z10T-A/Z15T-A, Z30(T)-A/Z35-A, and the Z30(T)-B uses a full length MiniSATA slot for storage; half length MiniSATA cards will not fit without an adapter as the appropriate screw mounts don't exist for half length MiniSATA cards.

The Z30-A and Z30-B were rebadged as the Satellite Z30-A and Z30-B respectively. These Satellite models lack a pointing stick, M.2-2242 slot with USB 2.0, fingerprint reader, smart card reader, and a docking port. Other than these differences, they are identical.

The A30(T)-C was once rebadged as the Satellite Pro A30(T)-C, but was quickly rebranded as a Portege. The A series differs from the R series by lacking a pointing stick and an M.2-2242 slot with USB 2.0. Features such as a fingerprint reader, smart card reader, and a docking port were made optional. Everything else was shared with the R series.

Some Japanese variants (R734, R73, RX33) contain a slimline SATA slot but do not have an opening for the optical drive, making it impossible to install optical drives. Installing 9.5 mm or 7 mm SATA storage drive trays are doable, though. Watch out for the lack of a webcam or microphone on Japanese variants, these two features were not standard features.

The Z30-C's successor is the X30-D, and the Z20T-C's successor is the X20W-D. Battery packs for the A and R series (except for the R30-A) are interchangeable with the Tecra A, C series, Z50-C, and the Z50-D (except for the A50-A). All models in this list were built by Toshiba.

Note: The WT72 and the ZBook 17 G5 do have an MXM 3.1 Type B slot, but they do not comply with MXM specifications due to the lack of a VBIOS chip on the card (ZBook 17 G5) or uses a custom heatsink mount and PCB shape (WT72). The WT72 is able to initialize other MXM cards, but the ZBook 17 G5 can't as the VBIOS resides on its UEFI ROM.
