This post and the post below does not include models released after Sharp's 2018 buyout of Toshiba's PC division. In terms of years, this means only models from 1985 to 2017 are included.
Model name identifiers:
Mixed: Txxxx
Consumer: Satellite, Libretto, Qosmio, Chromebook, KIRA, NBxxx, ACxxx
Professional: Satellite Pro, Tecra, Portege
Notes: If the model contains the name 'dynabook', it is a Japan exclusive model (e.g. dynabook VX1, only applies before 2018). Older Portege models released in Japan were rebranded as dynabook SS (Super Slim) models.
Model number identifiers:
0: Europe, the Middle East and Africa or Asia-Pacific region (e.g. Satellite M20)
5: North American region (e.g. Satellite M35)
Notes: Some models were region-exclusive. For example, the Satellite J82 was a Japan exclusive model. Most tend to be available in all regions, but they may not have the dynabook branding (e.g. libretto W100). NA and EMEA models use a dash to indicate the configuration (e.g. A35-S1593 & P20-204), while Japanese models use a slash to indicate the configuration (e.g. WX/3727CDS & SS2110 DS10L/2).
Part number suffixes:
U: United States (of America)
A: Australia (& New Zealand)
C: Canada
E: Europe (, the Middle East and Africa)
L: Latin America (& Asia-Pacific)
N: Nippon (Japan)
UEFI and BIOS vendors:
BIOS: Toshiba, Phoenix
UEFI: Insyde, AMI
Notes: WLAN, WWAN, and LCD whitelists do not exist in Toshiba's notebooks. If you're still interested in BIOS modifications anyway, use https://github.com/LongSoft/ToshibaComExtractor for Toshiba BIOS images compressed in .COM files. For models with a Phoenix BIOS, use Phoenix BIOS Editor or phcomp.exe and phxdeco.exe. I can't guarantee that these tools will be able to modify versions older or later than PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0. For UEFI-based models, use https://github.com/LongSoft/UEFITool if the UEFI's vendor is unknown. Otherwise, use Insyde H2OEZE for Insyde UEFIs or Aptio V UEFI Editor for AMI UEFIs. Alternatively, use AMIBCP for older AMI UEFIs.
Models released before 2013:
Please check the warnings for all models, they are documented here as 'Warning' notes.

5100/5105 [JP: DynaBook G5/G6/G6C/G7/G7C]
5200/5205 [JP: DynaBook G8/G9]
Warning: The 5000/5005 is prone to overheating due to an undersized CPU heatsink, which either leads to a shutdown in older BIOS versions or throttling to a slower FSB frequency in newer BIOS versions. If there is room, adding more thermal mass to the heatsink by taping small copper heatsinks with thermal adhesive may solve the problem. Replacing the original fan with a fan that has a higher CFM rating may work if the motherboard is able to supply enough power, but this is very unlikely.

Warning: The A70/A75 has two design defects that may result in a sudden shutdown or a loose DC-in power socket. The forced shutdown is caused by the lack of grounding on the palmrest, causing any sort of static electricity conducted through the aluminium speaker mesh or the touchpad's left and right buttons to reach the motherboard. The loose DC-in power socket is caused by cracked lead-free solder joints or a broken DC-in power socket pin, which could progress to a disconnected DC-in power socket (much worse). In some cases, the DC-in power socket pins may oxidize, leading to disconnected pins or a loose DC-in power socket. Both of these problems can be solved by using aluminium foil to connect the affected areas to other parts of the notebook's aluminium frame to dissipate the shock, and resoldering the DC-in power socket respectively.

Rebadges: Satellite M20 = TE2300
Warning: The TE2100 has several design defects that may lead to a loose GPU daughterboard connector or a dead GPU. I suspect these problems were caused by cracked out lead-free solder and a horrible cooling system. The TE2100 will revert to a strange 969x768 resolution if a new generic GPU driver from NVIDIA is installed in any OS, likely due to a customized EDID that Toshiba uses in its own NVIDIA GPU driver.

Notes: The WT72 and the ZBook 17 G5 do have an MXM 3.1 Type B slot, but they do not comply with MXM specifications due to the lack of a VBIOS chip on the card (ZBook 17 G5) or uses a custom heatsink mount and PCB shape (WT72). The WT72 is able to initialize other MXM cards, but the ZBook 17 G5 can't as the VBIOS resides on its UEFI ROM.

Batteries:
- Leak-prone nickel-metal hydride CMOS/BIOS batteries were mostly used in old to new Toshiba-built models. These cells can't be replaced with lithium-ion coin cells due to voltage differences. Outsourced old models generally used a non-removable lithium-ion coin cell, which were usually soldered to the motherboard. In newer outsourced models and Toshiba-built models, these were made removable by either implementing a coin cell battery holder or a 2-pin JST SH socket.
- Old models with nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride battery packs may leak out electrolyte, be careful as these leaks could damage the motherboard.
- Old and new models might have lithium-ion polymer pouch cells in their battery packs which have no way of venting out gas, eventually causing the pouch cell to expand. Models with lithium-ion cylindrical cells have pressure valves that are able to vent out excess gas, preventing the cylindrical cell from expanding. Avoid all models with lithium-ion polymer cells if you don't want to risk a chance of a bloated battery. Most models that utilize lithium-ion polymer battery packs are usually thin, so staying with thick models would be the recommended option
Display panels:
- All models equipped with a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlight will eventually develop a red/pink tint on the display and get dimmer over time, due to mercury adsorption and phosphor coating degradation respectively from regular usage. Fixing this requires replacing the CCFL backlight, although an easier way would be to replace the entire display panel.
- CCFL backlit display panels are driven by a DC-to-AC inverter. If the inverter fails, the CCFL backlight will not get any power and leave the display panel dark. Anything shown on the display panel can still be seen, but only with a flashlight pointed at it. To fix this, replace the inverter but make sure it is the correct inverter for your model. Most inverters built for TN LCDs will most likely overheat when used with a IPS LCD, as IPS LCD CCFL backlights generally draw more power on average compared to TN LCDs.
- Light-emitting diode (LED) backlit panels do not suffer from the same problems that CCFL backlit panels do, but they are not immune from problems related to aging. These either manifest as getting dimmer over time, or outright failure. They also do not have a DC-to-AC inverter, instead, they use an LED driver to power the backlight. Unlike inverters, LED drivers are generally hard to remove as they are part of the display panel.
- If you are buying a replacement panel, make sure to check the minimum values in its datasheet. Typical is usually stated but minimum is not, because it is generally much lower than the typical value. For example, if you were to buy a panel and get an oddly low contrast ratio or brightness from the panel lottery, you might be disappointed if you didn't check its datasheet for minimum values. To play it safe, either check the minimum values or buy a panel with better specs to compensate for the possibility that it could be much lower than average. Note that this is only important if you care about the following specs: contrast ratio, response time, brightness, color gamut, horizontal and vertical viewing angles.
CPUs:
- Models with a removable CPU may not necessarily be capable of accepting the fastest CPU available for its socket. Use MCExtractor to determine if your UEFI/BIOS accepts the CPU that you're upgrading to. If the UEFI/BIOS does not contain the appropriate microcode revision and platform, you must add it in manually via proprietary BIOS editors or hex editors. This is not guaranteed to work as some motherboards do not have a compatible VRM revision or UEFI/BIOS code to power or initialize the CPU.
- If the CPU that you have chosen works, you should consider reapplying thermal paste and additionally remove dust from the heatsink if there is any. One thing to note is the amount of heat the CPU dissipates, because as you go higher, the need for thermal paste that provides good contact and adequate heat transfer characteristics goes higher as well.
GPUs:
- Models with a removable GPU may not necessarily fully comply with MXM specifications. Some partially comply, such GPUs might have an MXM connector but their screw mounts and PCB shape do not follow the MXM specifications. Others are fully proprietary and do not follow MXM specifications at all, although these tend to be AGP-based GPUs.
- Models with any form of PCI-based internal expansion slots (e.g. CardBus, ExpressCard, MiniPCI, MiniPCIE, M.2) are not guaranteed to support graphics cards. However, models using early 32-bit platforms may have no problems with graphics cards connected to their internal expansion slot. Newer models will likely run into PCI address space problems due to the TOLUD being set to 3 GiB or greater, which can't be changed as their UEFI/BIOS does not have a option to change it. A UEFI/BIOS modification might be necessary in this case.
RAM:
- Models with removable RAM are not guaranteed to comply with JEDEC standards. While all newer models do comply with JEDEC standards, older models may not. Some of them only accepted JEIDA or proprietary expansion cards.
Miscellaneous:
- Models produced in 5 March 1998 to 7 November 1999 with a floppy disk controller could potentially write corrupted data to a floppy disk. The patch was released decades ago, but I'm not sure if it has actually fixed the problem.
