Yeah,VIA PT880 is decent, but everything that came before can be rated from garbage to mediocre. All while humble SiS 645DX can reach i850 level of performance with DDR333.

I fully agree with that, furthermore I consider the SiS chipset a plus for the universal agp slot, unlucky they dropped it soon after the 645DX

I've just received the P4V88+, I will proceed to do the test asap.

Hi do you experience this AGP performance problem in Win98? Some PT880 boards have it.

In my experience the Asus P4C800 series of i875P motherboards are the fastest Socket 478 boards by some margin, when running a 200MHz (800) FSB CPU stock with all Asus tweaks active that is.

When overclocking most of Asus special tweaks gets disabled unless you boot at stock frequency and use a clockgen utility or use a modified BIOS.

Edit

I just noticed I was a bit late to the party

In any case an Asus P4C800 i875P motherboard is a great board to have when tinkering with Socket 478.

/Edit

New PC: i9 12900K @5GHz all cores @1.2v. MSI PRO Z690-A. 32GB DDR4 3600 CL14. 3070Ti.
Old PC: Dual Xeon X5690@4.6GHz, EVGA SR-2, 48GB DDR3R@2000MHz, Intel X25-M. GTX 980ti.
Older PC: K6-3+ 400@600MHz, PC-Chips M577, 256MB SDRAM, AWE64, Voodoo Banshee.

I think this is the case with ASUS 865PE boards as well. I remember benchmarks showing that @200MHz ASUS 865PE boards are neck-and-neck with 875P boards from other vendors, but even with a 1MHz overclock they fall behind. So this could only be explained by those special tweaks.

With all their faults, ASUS P4P800-E and P4C800-E are among my favorite S478 boards.

Watch out for the earliest Asus P4P800 (non deluxe) variants though. They may be susceptible to ESD problems.

Hello, hoping that I'm not hijacking the thread. I stumbled unto this one while searching for Socket 478 benchmarks.

I have to admit that I'm not too retro HDW savvy, in 2020 during the pandemic, I started to gather old computer parts out of nostalgia, mainly to build gaming PCs for Win98 and to find something, if not the same, resembling an IBM Aptiva with Win95 which was my first home PC.

At the start I couldn't find 'proper' Win98 compatible machines or parts, so I went with the alternative to build P4 machines for Win98SE gaming (Phil's lab).

Anyhow, I ended up with 9 different socket 478 mobos, and I'm trying to decide which will be the best to retain, perhaps to keep 2-3 tops, so I was wondering if you guys could give me some tips, like e.g., which chipsets to look out for, etc. As subsequently I did get ahold of various socket 370 and slot 1 for my DOS/Win95-98 gaming, I will be using the socket 478 machine(s) for Windows XP games.

Here's the list:

1. HP Compaq Evo [OEM]
2. Dell Optiplex GX270 sff [OEM]
3. MSI HETIS 865GV-E LITE [OEM]
4. INTEL D865PERL [ATX ff]
5. Gigabyte GA-8IEX Series P4 Titan 533 [ATX ff]
6. Asus P4P800-SE I865PE [ATX ff]
7. AsRock P4VM800 [microATX ff]
8. Gigabyte GA-8LD533 [microATX ff]
9. Asus P4BGL-MX [microATX ff]

The Asus P4BGL-MX seems to have some issues, I couldn't manage to go through installing Windows, will try and swap the CPU.

I would exclude boards that do not have an AGP slot, ie:
3. MSI HETIS 865GV-E LITE [OEM].
8. gigabyte GA-8LD533 [microATX ff].
9. asus P4BGL-MX [microATX ff].
Believe me, you don't want to play on an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics card 😀

And also, on second thought, the rest of the OEMs (if you are not a fan of any of the companies):
1. HP Compaq Evo [OEM].
2. Dell Optiplex GX270 sff [OEM].
They will probably be very stable, but not as efficient as you would expect, and forget about overclocking....

BTW. It is probably better to create a new thread.

Thanks a lot! Will narrow down the keepers list to:

6. Asus P4P800-SE I865PE [ATX ff]

Unless, of course advised differently.

I'm not against GA-8IEX - it's probably very good board, but why to use i845E when you have i865PE 😉
- FSB800, DDR400, dual-channel, SATA ...

7. AsRock P4VM800 [microATX ff]

This one is more flexible if you care about DOS compatibility. Also has solid onboard audio.

The P4P800 SE is a nice one. It is a later revision, like the P4P800-E Deluxe, but missing the Firewire, the Promise RAID controller, and the 8-channel audio (only standard 6-channel).

The D865PERL had a few variants. The black ones were nicer than the green ones, and included onboard LAN, a full set of jacks for 6-channel audio, possibly RAID.

The Asrock P4VM800 is nice for a small form factor, if you don't mind having only 2 RAM slots.
