Hiya!

I have built a p4/2.4ghz win98se machine in order to run nicely win9x games, from the very first to the "latest" ones in 2001/2002 that won't run fine on a modern pc.

The machine has 512MB ram, a 200GB HDD, a SB Live! and a v2 sli setup. All running fine. (v2 sli setup used only in glide-only games or games that have other probs like Blood2 that comes to mind due to recent discussions here, I really prefer the GF for anything else because of the higher resolutions and overal rendering quality...)

I have 3 AGP nv cards that I can use with it:

a. A 4200ti with 64MB, don't know the manufacturer but it has a really nice arctic cooler cooling solution , scored ~11.150 at 3dmark2001se with 45.23 drivers

b. a Gainward SilentFX 5700 256MB , it could be a 5700ultra gpu , can't remember atm , untested for now

c. a recently acquired Pixelview 6800GT 256MB card, it's just a reference design one (noisy cooler) , scored ~15.100 at 3dmark2001se with 81.98 drivers

(also I have available a geforce1/64mb and a geforce2-gts/64mb too IIRC)

Anyone happens to know what card would give me the less problems?
The point in building this machine was to have as much power as possible in older win9x games so I get fluid framerates...

For now I only tested to some extend Ultima9 on 4200 and 6800 ... 4200 seems to behave better or the same to my surprise... but that could be because of the 6800's drivers... And I can't say I was amazed by the 3dmark2001se performance of the 6800GT...

Any recommendations and advice will be appreciated, thanks!!! 😊

Nice, nice components indeed! I'm in the midst (awaiting CPU to arrive) of building a similar P4 setup for running Win98SE/ME+2K.

I have this soft spot for the Ti series - they somehow feel "solid". I have a MSI GF4 Ti 4200 AGP 8X and a Gainward GF4 Ti 4800 SE (which is just a 4600-esque performer). I tend to stick with my MSI Ti4200VTD since it has a more "heavier" copper heatsink. It never failed me in any games I played, in terms of stability. I tend to use the drivers which came with the card - which has additional overclock utility designed for it (which I seldom use, though), and has this MSI labelling in system properties tabs.

In terms of raw performance, I would choose the 6800GT, but I would rather wait for a true 6800 Ultra, with custom heastsink. I once had the 6800 Ultra (ref. design) but the fan noise was too much that I replaced it with the more "humble" Ti4200.

I don't have much experience in using the FX series of the GF cards. But I can say that I like my MSI Ti card a lot.

When it comes to Windows 9x era games, I think the GF4 series are capable enough to run them at 1024x768x16 or 32 with smooth frame rates (please correct me if I'm wrong). But a GeForce 6800 Ultra will be the added luxury. Another "luxury" card is the Radeon 9800XT 256MB - which I'm still searching for..

Again, I still have this "thing" for the Ti series. 😉

EDIT : *That arctic cooler is a very nice one with low noise. I think it is compatible with the 6800GT. You can try fixing it on the 6800GT.

thanks for the input, I like the 4ti too, what I don't like is that I have 3 of them and all 3 are 64MB models...
The AC cooler does not fit the 6800gt Malik because I don't have the bits needed to mount it on the different holes the 6800 has... but I got this baby HERE for a nice price too!
I *think* I read somewhere that FX series are very compatible with older software ...?

6800GT. There's a huge difference in performance from the FX to the GF6 in more demanding games in high resolutions and with all the bells and whistles turned up to the max. GF6 is also the last generation of nVidia cards, and the last generation of video cards PERIOD, to have a Win98 driver. Radeon x8XX cards only have 2k/XP drivers.

Yup I saw a 6600GT run KOTOR2 at what looked like 50% better framerate than my 5900U. That was somewhat shocking. The game doesn't use floating point pixel shader functions AFAIK. GF6 was a considerable improvement.

For W98 games? Hmm aren't all of these cards a bit new?

The TI4200 is DX8 and the other ones DX9.

The last Catalyst driver for Win9x/ME does have support for Radeon X300 upto X800XT series. I've used the PCI-E version of the X800 in Win98SE last time, AND played System Shock 2 with it.

Here's a "Deja Vu" 😁
