I'm starting to build this vintage setup around the Opti 386/486DLC motherboard, I want to achieve a DOS gaming PC but also a test platform for old ISA sound cards which I happen to own a few.
I need help to choose the storage I will most likely have win 95 (OSR2) at least, so I need some hundreds megs.
So, here's the junk

mobo/processor

it supports the on die L1 cache and many other setting I don't know.
I have 8x 4mb simms for a whopping 32Mb !! 🤣

case

it's complete, heavy and in good shape

video for now, too bad the chipset does not support "acceleration"

Storage I have this bunch of disks, from 40mb to 1gb, I particularly like the seagate ST-157A because it's double height, but it's too small, so my choice for IDE would be the 1gb Maxtor

Or the HP (seagate) 1gb + Future Domain SCSI

Another view of the st-157a

Should I stick with IDE for better DOS compatibility? or give a small speed increase with the SCSI

Sound cards determine a lot of compatiblity too. Judging from the avatar I just hope you don't put in a Turtle Beach MAD16 type of card , those are terrible 😀

Haha, no I don't have a Montecarlo, perhaps some of these:

or a TB Pinnacle also have some PAS16, SB CT1600 etc..

Put a cooler on that cpu, those sold at retail had a small heatsink attacked to the cpu and it does put out a little heat. Had the 66mhz model..

I thought about, it indeed runs a little hot and only had running for 5 minutes, the problem is I'm not going to glue a heat-sink into it and the socket doesn't seem to have any way to clip a standard 486 cooler and fan. So I might replace it with the more common and possibly cooler 40Mhz DLC

I think the Texas is not compatible with this motherboard I belive I have tried it and didn't work, but might give it a shot.

Drop the barrel battery too before its too late

Oh yes, will do that really soon, probably I will replace it with 3 AAA cells.

Thanks for the advises guys, what do I do with the HDD ? IDE or SCSI, by the way I also happen to have a COMPRO 8x CR-RW SCSI new old stock.

SCSI FTW!

I have that in my 486 (which btw have the same case as yours) and I've never regretted that option. The 486 loads Windows 98 quicker than my Compaq!

I think you cannot get all the 1GB from your IDE choices. The BIOS in that mobo will (most) probably restrict you into something like 528MB (or 504MB, more correctly) at most. Of course there is always brand specific drivers and/or software like Ontrack Systems that will certainly help, if you want to go that way (I mean driving your HDD by the help of a SW driver).

This is valid for almost all mobos with pre 1995 BIOS (i.e. no support for LBA).

I didn't think his CPU had a heatsink though. Mine all came without a heatsink. His CPU is the 386-486 upgrade chip (it's a 386 pin-compatible chip), it's not a Socket 1/2/3 chip 😉

And even if it did have a heatsink, I never even seen a CPU cooler that fit a 386, would love to see a pic of one 😀

Wel, I have seen intel 80286 with heatsink, I haven't seen 386 though but for sure there are Cyrix 486DLC and DRX2 with factory heatsinks , my processors don't have it but do a quick search in google images for cyrix 486 DLC.
The CPU even if it has a 386 socket it is in fact a 486 SX

I have put on hold this project and completed the build of a 1996 era PC.
I will post pictures later

Your link didn't work, but a quick search on google revealed that indeed these chips could come with a heatsink. You learn something new every day! 😁
